Kingman Ranger (Part Time) AKingman Ranger is a valued member of the Living Classrooms of the NationalCapital Region Kingman Island team, playing a key role in the success of theKingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area and the restoration of theAnacostia River. Core Responsibilities • Assist inmanaging, restoring, and maintaining three miles of trails on Kingman Islandthat includes boardwalks, hiking trails, biking trails, gravel roads, backwoodstrails, as well as areas surrounding the islands, along Benning Road and thefoot trails on the Stadium side. Learn and implement the best practices intrail creation and management. Ensures trails are kept safe and hospitable. • Ensures thatKingman and Heritage Islands are kept trash-free by maintaining wastereceptacles as well as any trash on trails and other areas on the property. • Assist inappropriately greeting visitors and field questions/inquiries while on theislands. Also facilitate clean up events, and paddling sessions for publicpaddles as well as private groups. • Assist inweekend/Evening events held by Living Classrooms, The Department of Energy andEnvironment (DOEE), as well as other partners. • Assist inleading groups such as volunteers, students, job skills training programs, andsummer youth employment program participants in activities listed above. • Assist inmanaging and maintaining Low Impact Development Features on Kingman Islandincluding 1500 sq ft rain garden, and other features to reduce pollution. • Assist inmanaging meadow habitat, wetland habitat, vernal pool habitat, forests, andother natural resources management and restoration. • Assist intraditional landscaping and upkeep of entrances and meadows, planting,trimming, etc. Adhering to plans provided by DOEE for the maintenance of theislands, removing invasive species as well as helping to support native plantsand trees. • Assist inproject-based work to transform parts of Kingman and Heritage Islands into morewelcoming spaces for the public. Will include installing benches, creatingpicnic areas, planting trees and shrubs, etc. • Assist with other duties as assigned. Required Education, Skills, and Abilities • A strong workethic and desire to succeed • Preference givento experience in and desire to work in land management, basic carpentry, litterreduction, conducting education or recreation activities with youth and/oradults, and green infrastructure. • A desire toserve as an example to others. • A team player,taking initiative and direction well • Interacts wellwith customers, clients, visitors, etc. • Organized andtimely • Willingness towork outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions • Willingness toactively participate in classroom and hands-on skills training and evaluationsfor professional skill development • Basic administrative skills and a willingness to learn more • Ability to lift 50 pounds at a time • Ability to walk at least 4 miles per day Supervisor and Additional Information TheKingman Ranger reports to the Kingman Rangers and Facilities Manager and willregularly receive both informal and formal feedback on job performance. LCF-NCR'sprincipal office is located at The Dent House, 156 Q Street SW. The Kingman andHeritage Islands Conservation Area can be accessed from RFK Stadium Lot 6, offOklahoma Avenue in northeast DC. The employee must be able to get to/from bothof these locations in a reliable manner. About Kingman Island KingmanIsland is a man-made island in the Anacostia River near Robert F. KennedyMemorial Stadium. Kingman Island south of Benning Road and the smaller adjacentHeritage Island together constitutes the District of Columbia's Kingman andHeritage Islands Conservation Area. The District Department of Energy andEnvironment has agency responsibility for the Conservation Area, and LivingClassrooms of the National Capital Region has helped to manage the area by an agreementwith the DC government since 2007. The Conservation Area is open to the publicand received more than 120,000 visits in 2020.
