Job Summary SPECIAL DETAILS: • Position # 2191 • 8 hours per day, 200 duty days • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field including but not limited to Counseling, Psychology, Education, Liberal Studies, Cultural Studies, Social work, etc. • A California Pupil Personnel Services credential is desired. SALARY & BENEFITS: • Step 1 - $30.17 hourly • District paid benefits are included with this position Job Description / Essential Elements:General Summary: The Native American Program Mentor will implement and sustain a school based one to one mentoring program that provides a structured and developmental relationship between Native American youth and school/community personnel. A range of mentoring activities and services will assist students with problems that may impede their ability to be successful in school. These projects seek to assist children in receiving support and guidance from the school and community, to improve academic success, and preserve the Native American culture. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: • Support Native American student academic success; including monitoring academic progress, and developing strategies for improvement. • Establish and maintain a student to student peer mentor program. • Publish Native American Program newsletter. • Attend and/or participate in special events, such as evening meetings and community events. • Develop and implement strategies to recruit culturally diverse volunteers/activities. • Take responsibility for all phases of community/school cultural activities: (planning, publicity, and implementation) • Be an advocate for Native American students and families. • Attend IEP meetings at the request of parents or teachers • Attend Administrative Hearings at the request of parents or administration • Attend Parent/Teacher conferences at the request of parents or teacher • May make home visits • Classroom visits with students, including preschool and homework clubs on the Rancheria • Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: • Correct English usage, grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure, both orally and in writing. • Basic organizational skills, recordkeeping skills, and clerical procedures. Ability to: • Enjoy students and challenging situations, and deal with them in a patient manner. • Motivate and encourage students' participation in appropriate school activities. • Follow oral and written instructions. • Establish and maintain friendly, cooperative and effective relationships with all persons contacted in the course of work. • Exercise good judgment and react with flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs. • Use correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. • Work independently in the absence of immediate supervisor. • Effectively direct the work of individual students and groups of students. • Participate as an active team member in a collaborative style. • Participate in off-site staff development activities. Physical Characteristics: Requires ambulatory ability to stand and walk for intermittent periods of time. Requires the ability to lift and carry lightweight materials, (fewer than 20 pounds). Requires hand-arm-eye coordination to operate a personal computer keyboard. Requires visual acuity to arrange materials and products, observe movements of people, and read letters and numbers. Requires auditory ability to project voice to a small group and carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Education and Experience: This position requires a Bachelors degree in a related field including but not limited to Counseling, Psychology, Education, Liberal Studies, Cultural Studies, Social work, etc. A California Pupil Personnel Services credential is desired. Licenses and Other Requirements: A valid California Driver's License.
