The Virginia Department of Aviation is searching for a high-energy, innovation-driven Chief of Facilities & Technology to lead statewide infrastructure and push the boundaries of what's possible in the aviation ecosystem. In this role, you'll command up to a $1.4M Facilities & Equipment program, oversee critical NAVAIDs and airfield systems at 65 public-use airports and drive major technology upgrades that keep Virginia's skies safe, efficient, and future-ready. From FAA coordination to FCC compliance to next-gen equipment installations, you'll be the force behind it all. But this isn't just operations - this is innovation leadership. You'll partner with airports, engineers, planners, and industry trailblazers to advance cutting-edge initiatives, including unmanned aircraft systems, advanced air mobility, airport electrification, and sustainable aviation technologies. Your expertise will directly influence statewide aviation strategy. Manages the department's Facilities and Equipment (F&E) programs, overseeing up to a $1.4 million program budget and coordinating with division engineers on the inspection, maintenance, and installation of radio navigation aids, visual aids, lighting systems, and communications equipment at 65 licensed public-use airports. Oversees the NAVAID program, including inventory management, procurement of parts and equipment, and contract administration. Coordinates FAA inspections of DOAV owned NAVAID installations. Monitors FCC license expirations and renewals for airport equipment to ensure continued compliance. Administers the registration and licensing database for private-use airports and heliports. Collaborates with division planners, engineers, agency staff, external partners, and airports to identify needs and implement strategies that support the integration of emerging aviation technologies. Minimum Qualifications Strong knowledge of civil, industrial, or electrical engineering principles and practices. Considerable expertise in design, contract administration, project management, construction inspection, planning, program administration, and policy development. Ability to interpret and apply state and federal regulations. Familiarity with emerging aviation technologies, including unmanned systems, advanced air mobility, sustainable aviation fuels, and airport electrification. Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in using personal computer applications. Additional Considerations BS degree in civil, electrical, industrial or related engineering discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using field survey equipment. Private pilot and Part 107 license preferred.
