As a Utility Locator - with Light Power Traffic, you're the person who makes sure everyone else can dig safely. This title is essential to avoid broken power and fiber lines that keep the city lit and moving. This role is all about protecting the Cities' underground assets and providing safe work zones. Job Responsibilities 1. Utilize the City's Geographic Information System (GIS), site plans, and related documents, and perform visual inspection of each site to determine the existence of the City of Sioux Falls' underground facilities on private property/ easements, roadways, and public property. Thoroughly search for underground utilities in a designated area, accurately marking the location with paint or flags, completing the necessary documentation, and photographing each locate, typically within 48 hours of notification. Use a City-provided laptop to document and close all locate tickets. 2. Safely connect locator equipment to energized cabinets and equipment. 3. Report inaccuracies and errors in existing GIS utility records to the Engineering Division to be corrected. 4. Communicate locate work performed to ensure accurate reporting. 5. Perform duties within established safety policies, regulations and procedures. Work within prescribed company safety procedures for all assigned locates. 6. Stay current and up-to-date with national and statewide guidelines including South Dakota One Call. 7. Operate and maintain assigned vehicles and equipment in safe, clean and good working condition. 8. Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, hauling snow, shoveling sidewalks, or assisting mechanics in the maintenance of snow removal equipment. 9. Provide assistance to other utility departments as required. 10. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school or GED certification with a minimum of one (1) year of experience related to utility distribution systems; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority. Willing to work standby and extended hours when required. Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement. Supplemental InformationProficient use of locate and marking equipment. Possess necessary skill level to operate sensitive electronic locating equipment in a safe and effective manner. Knowledge of practices, equipment, and techniques related to locating underground power, traffic, fiber optic, water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems. Knowledge of or the ability to learn City of Sioux Falls methods and procedures. Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to equipment operation. Computer experience including the use of ESRI GIS products. Ability to work independently, to plan and organize work and to solve problem situations. Strong customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to keep records related to the work. Desire to learn and ability to attend company provided continuing educational opportunities. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the public. Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
