Department of Elder and Human Services Bus Driver Position is responsible for providing transportation and customer services to the Canton Department of Elder and Human Services. Work includes picking up passengers at their homes and transporting them to various destinations, operating bus, and maintaining records of mileage and scheduled trips. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. Operates bus in transporting senior citizens. Picks up individuals at their homes and transports them to and from doctor visits, malls, supermarkets, or other destinations. Assists customers to the door with packages and corresponds with customer as needed for directions or other transportation issues. Maintains records of vehicle mileage, scheduled and trip reports. Calls for assistance in an emergency and provides comfort assistance as necessary until specialized medical personnel arrive. Provides transportation after normal working hours for special events. May be required to collate statistical information on transportation in a report to the Director. Performs similar or related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under direct supervision, where clear, detailed and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. The employee works as instructed and consults with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the guidelines or instructions. ACCOUNTABILITY The nature of work or the operation of large, complex or potentially dangerous equipment increases the probability that errors could be serious. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include significant monetary losses, waste of material, damage to buildings, equipment or personal injuries. JUDGMENT The work is well defined or has detailed rules, instructions and procedures. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case. COMPLEXITY The work consists of simple, routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in well-known or established procedures. NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS Relationships are primarily with co-workers and the public, involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outside organizations. More than ordinary courtesy, tact and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons. CONFIDENTIALITY Employee has access to some confidential information in the performance of their duties. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma or equivalent and from one to up to three years of bus or commercial driving experience or related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Current CDL required for position; CPR and First Aid certification preferred. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS Knowledge : Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, the geographical layout of the Town and surrounding area, and the operation of the bus; knowledge of First Aid and the ability to administer elementary First Aid. Abilities : Ability to read, write and properly communicate with passengers and others; ability to work effectively with the senior population and disabled individuals; and Skills : Excellent driving skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT The employee works on a moderately noisy bus and may be frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Equipment operated includes a 24-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours. The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to emergency situations or to attend evening meetings. PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS Physical Skills The employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, talk or listen/hear, use hands, and reach with arms and hands; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Motor Skills Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Visual Skills Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes and ability to drive a bus. Qualifications High School graduate or equivalent and three (3) years of bus or commercial driving experience with a clean driving record. A valid CDL is required for the position. CPR and First Aid certification is preferred.
