Salary: $25.98 - $35.07 Hourly Location : Whitewater, WI Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 2026-DPW03 Department: Public Works Opening Date: 02/25/2026 Job Summary The purpose of the Laborer I - Streets/Parks/Forestry position is to provide repair and maintenance of municipal streets, parking lots, parks, street/park equipment, stormwater facilities, traffic/street lighting, and forestry for the City of Whitewater. The first-round interviews will be conducted during the week of March 23, 2026. Essential Duties and Responsibilities This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary. Maintains and repair the streets, parking lots, parks, traffic/street lighting, stormwater infrastructure, and forestry facilities. Operates snowplow and other various snow removing equipment. Operates equipment and/or performs manual labor for assigned duties. Performs routine, emergency and preventative maintenance functions as well as custodial duties as necessary. Performs minor electrical wiring and repair with traffic/street lights. Performs maintenance and repair to street/park equipment. Works with parts and maintain inventory. Performs minor carpentry work details. Keeps preventative maintenance repair records. Timely response to emergency situations. Directly responsible for cleanliness of work and personal areas. Abides by all safety regulations required at the facility. Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the department. Available to be called out for emergencies such as snowfall, floods, downed trees, etc. Other duties as assigned. Three to five years of experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of municipal streets, parking lots, parks, street/park equipment, stormwater facilities, traffic/street lighting, and forestry operation. Experience in mechanics, minor electrical, welding, pipefitting, plumbing, asphalt, concrete, and carpentry is desirable. Large truck / equipment experience desirable, including snow plows, dump trucks, street sweepers, etc. Language Skills Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, copy, record and transcribe data and information. Ability to persuade, convince, and /or train others. Ability to advise and interpret how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situation. Ability to utilize a variety of information such as code manuals, city ordinances, directories, state statues, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with city personnel and city residents. Willing and open communication with both management and operational staff on a daily basis. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, present values, and spatial relationships. Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to work well under pressure, handle stressful situations, organize work, set priorities, manage time and resources to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternative solutions. Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity when required in the evaluation of information. Ability to interpret data results and correlate those to necessary plant process adjustments. Other Qualifications Knowledge of arc and oxy-acetylene welding desired. Mechanical aptitude, knowledge of basic electrical controls. Proficiency in computer operation and working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures including operation of Microsoft Office. Skill in First Aid and CPR, certification preferred. Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Ability to work effectively in cooperation with fellow employees as a member of the staff team. Ability to work and remain motivated in an independent work environment. Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and make continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as computers and other office machines, and or materials used in performing essential functions. Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities and differences between characteristics of colors, odors, shapes and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks. The employee must exert physical effort varying from sedentary to continuous activity during a work shift. Involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, and climb. The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet except for areas where hearing protection is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee works in high precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions as well as other temperature and weather variations. Supervision Received and/or ExercisedWorks under general supervision, however, performs recurring job duties independently. Position may supervise volunteers, interns, seasonal and part-time employees on a limited basis. Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) - WRS participation begins the 1st day of employment. The City and Employees share the required Employee Trust Fund (ETF) contribution. Wisconsin Public Employers Group Life Insurance Program - Employees are eligible to purchase life insurance in this program on the 1st of the month following their hire date. Spousal/dependent coverage is available. Income Continuation Insurance (Long Term Disability Insurance) - Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month following their hire date. City will pay full cost of basic coverage at 180 day elimination period. Employee may pay a premium to reduce the elimination period and purchase supplemental coverage if eligible. Health Insurance - Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month following their hire date. Single or Family coverage available. Dental Insurance - Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month following their hire date. Vision Insurance - Employees are eligible for coverage the 1st of the month following their hire date. Section 125 Flexible Benefit - Optional Employee benefit. Employees are immediately eligible for the City's FSA (Section 125) Program benefit upon hire. FSA contributions can be made for Medical and/or Dependent care. Paid Vacation - Employees are eligible for paid vacation. Vacation time is prorated during the first year of employment and is awarded on a calendar-year basis. Paid Sick Leave - Employees earn sick leave hours each pay period. Lifestyle Savings Account (LSA) - $500.00 for wellness and other eligible expenses. This amount will be prorated based on your start date for the first year of employment. Wisconsin Deferred Compensation Program (WDC) - The WDC is Wisconsin's supplemental retirement savings program authorized under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC).
