Working closely with a Recreation Supervisor and a dedicated team of staff, the Senior Gymnastics Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising gymnastics classes and events, as well as coaching and mentoring less experienced instructors. DEFINITION To perform the most difficult and complex gymnastics instructor duties involving supervision, assignment, review and participation in the work of staff responsible for providing gymnastics services and programs on an independent basis within the Recreation Division of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. The Senior Gymnastics Instructor is distinguished from the Gymnastics Instructor classification by the assignment of the full range of duties, including the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to the Gymnastics Instructor series. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives direction from a Recreation Supervisor. Exercises direct supervision over Full-Time Equivalent Gymnastics Instructors and part-time/seasonal recreation staff. Incumbent coordinates and oversees work performed by less experienced personnel as assigned. Example of Duties ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of Full-Time Equivalent Gymnastics Instructors and part-time/seasonal staff responsible for providing gymnastics activities within the Recreation Division; maintain personnel records as required. Participate in the selection of Full-Time Equivalent Gymnastics Instructors and part-time/seasonal staff for assigned area; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing gymnastics programs; implement and enforce policies and procedures. Promote and coordinate specific activities within assigned area of gymnastics; prepare program events and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures. Organize, schedule, and implement gymnastics activities within assigned area. Schedule usage of gymnastics facility for special gymnastics events in assigned area. Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; maintain and file recreation records and reports in alignment with the City's records retention policy; prepare statistical reports as required. Monitor and inspect gymnastics facility and equipment; secure gymnastics facility. Develop, plan, and lead gymnastics classes in areas of assignment; plan and implement special events and activities including trips, camps, meetings, and performances. Respond to inquiries and concerns regarding gymnastics activities; research and resolve conflicts as required. Marginal Functions: Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of gymnastics; incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Typical Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic operations, services and activities of gymnastics program. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Principles, techniques, and practices of modem gymnastics program development and implementation. Modem office equipment including computers. Recent developments, current literature and information related to gymnastics. Ability to: Supervise, organize, train and evaluate the work of Full-Time Equivalent Gymnastics Instructors and part-time/seasonal recreation staff. Coordinate and direct assigned gymnastics programs suited to the community. Recommend and implement goals and objectives for gymnastics program. Interpret and explain City policies and procedures. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public. Maintain mental capacity with allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time Operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Demonstration of basic gymnastics skills Spotting Basic-Advanced gymnastics skills Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations Communicating with others Reading and writing Operating assigned equipment and vehicles Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three to five years of increasingly responsible experience teaching gymnastics including some lead supervisory experience. Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, physical education, business administration, public administration or a related field. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R. and First Aid Certificate, USAG Safety Certification, USAG Membership. Additional Information WORKING CONDITIONS Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Scheduling Conditions: Expectation to work afternoons, evenings and weekends. Working during peak programming hours, typically weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends, is a consistent and integral part of this role.Environmental Conditions: Gymnastics Center; work closely with children and members of the public. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, sitting for long periods of time, or demonstration of basic gymnastics skills, spotting basic advanced gymnastics skills, moving and/or moderate lifting of gymnastics equipment. The City of Novato is an Equal Opportunity Employer Salary: Starting salary is generally the first step of the range listed; however, advanced step appointments may be approved based upon qualifications when warranted. Subsequent salary increases within the range are scheduled yearly and may be granted based upon satisfactory service. 9/80 work schedule with closures on alternate Fridays. Employees work nine hours per day and eight hours per day on the working Friday. Benefits: #1021 MOU The City participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). In compliance with AB 340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 2% at 55; employee contributes 9.5% of salary, or 2% at 62; employee contributes 7.25% of salary, depending on eligibility. The City provides a specific dollar amount to each employee based on the employee's benefit enrollment level to apply to medical, dental, life and disability insurance. The dental program and life insurance policy are mandatory. Health, vision and disability options are available. Employees who do NOT enroll in a healthcare plan through the City will receive up to $250 per month as an addition to their gross earnings. Other Benefits Information: Employee Assistance Program: A City-paid EAP is available for employees and members of their household. Long-term Disability Insurance is provided as an optional benefit. Employee pays $9.78 per month if opting in. State Disability Insurance (SDI) is provided. Employee pays 0.6% of salary (pre-tax). Deferred Compensation Savings Plans (457) are available to employees through a deferred compensation program. Employee must pay an amount equal to 1.45% of salary toward Medicare. An equal amount is paid by the City. The City does not participate in Social Security. Leaves: The City offers 14 paid holidays; 80 hours of vacation after 1 year (graduates to 21 days for 20 years of service); Employees currently working for another agency (state, federal or local) will have their vacation rate adjusted to account for their years of service with that public agency. New employees will receive 40 hours of sick leave on their start date.
