Mission YouthBuild Public Charter School (YouthBuild PCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YouthBuild PCS prepares students for postsecondary education and the workplace by offering academic, vocational, and workforce development programs in both English and Spanish. YouthBuild PCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. Students serve their community through volunteer projects and by helping create housing for low-income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Position Summary The Unarmed School Security Officer supports the safety, security, and positive school culture of YouthBuild DC PCS. This role ensures that all students, staff, and visitors enter the building safely and that established security protocols are consistently followed. The Officer also serves as a welcoming and professional first point of contact for the school community. Key Responsibilities: Student Arrival & Security Screening Arrive by 8:00 a.m. to prepare for student arrival beginning at 8:30 a.m. Ensure that at least one additional staff member is present before allowing students into the building. Permit no more than three (3) students to enter at a time to ensure proper security clearance. Require students to remove jackets, empty pockets, and place all bags/purses and personal items on the inspection table. Conduct thorough inspections of all items to prevent illicit materials (e.g., weapons, drugs, prohibited items) from entering the building. Turn over any confiscated items to the Chief Operating Officer, Head of School, or Dean of School Culture. Require students to walk through the metal detector as many times as necessary to clear screening. Utilize a hand-held wand when necessary (e.g., ankle monitors or repeated alerts). Allow students to enter the main building only after successfully clearing security. Apply the same screening process for late-arriving students. Accurately document late arrivals and issue late passes. Front Desk & Visitor Management Manage the front desk once student arrival is complete. Ensure all visitors clear security before entering the building. Verify visitor identification and confirm the purpose of their visit. Maintain the Visitors Log with accurate sign-in information. Issue an orange visitor pass including name, date, time of arrival, and location within the building. Allow delivery personnel to drop off packages and notify the Main Office promptly. Lunch Return Procedures Beginning at 12:45 p.m., conduct the same student screening procedures for students returning from lunch. Schedule Reporting hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Reports to: Chief Operating Officer or designee Qualifications Successful candidates will possess: Experience working with young adults in an urban community. Experience working with disconnected/opportunity youth ages 16-24 (preferred). Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (preferred). A positive attitude, professionalism, enthusiasm, self-confidence, and flexibility. Strong observational skills and the ability to maintain a calm presence in a school environment.
