Salary: $19.68 Hourly Location : Fairfield, CA Job Type: Part-Time Job Number: 2025-00025 Department: PARKS & REC Opening Date: 01/01/2025 Closing Date: Continuous FLSA: Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit: FPTEA Description The City of Fairfield is looking for a Senior Lifeguard! The successful candidate will maintain constant watch over the City of Fairfield public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assist swimmers in distress, and provide emergency and routine first aid. The incumbent will take the leadership role in customer service and emergency situations; oversee and motivate the Lifeguards on duty and must be ready to contribute to the department's mission to DELIVER AWESOME in the amazing work we do in Parks & Recreation as leaders of play and builders of community! Please Note: This position is represented by Fairfield Part-Time Employees' Association (FPTEA), is part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied scheduleto meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is typically at the Aquatics Complex at Allan Witt Park, but may include other facilities, and is performed both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, sun, water, noise, dust, pollens and chemicals/cleaning agents used in an aquatics complex. There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends and holidays. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires the ability sit or stand for long periods of time; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, walk frequently, lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity is also required for observation. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the advanced journey level class in which incumbents take the leadership role in customer service and emergency situations; and oversee and motivate the Lifeguards on duty. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: This position reports to the designated lead worker on duty. This position provides lead direction to lower level workers in the program area to which the position is assigned. This position does not exercise any regular supervisory responsibilities. Minimum QualificationsMust be 18 years of age or older or possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one (1) full seasonequivalent to performing the duties equivalent to a Lifeguard II with the City of Fairfield is required. A full season is defined as 240 hours (20 hours/week for 3 months) LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment is required. Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training with Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification is required. Possession of a valid ARC Water Safety Instructor Certification is required within 12 months of appointment. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation is required. Ability to pass a pre-employment teaching skills evaluation is required. Examples of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Conduct continuous surveillance of pool area for signs of swimmers in trouble and for violations of pool and safety regulations. Monitor activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents; enforce rules, regulations and policies. Respond quickly to emergency situations in the water or surrounding areas; perform as lead worker in emergency procedures and first aid situations as needed. Maintain a safe environment and take steps to prevent accidents by eliminating potentially hazardous conditions. Provide courteous and professional service to program participants, facility users, City staff and the public; discusses program and participant concerns and provides solutions when appropriate. Plan, lead and monitor lower level workers in the completion of daily schedule, zones of coverage, scanning and lifeguard rotation. Monitor behavior of lower level workers and program participants. May prepare and conduct assigned portions of staff meetings and trainings for lower level workers. Conduct set up and cleanup of facility; may be charged with opening and closing duties. Present professional appearance (including wearing appropriate uniform or attire) at all times. Attend and participate at staff meetings and trainings. Perform daily inspections of equipment and facility; corrects and/or reports any potentially unsafe conditions. Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility; maintain accurate records. Provide aquatic safety and instruction for guests. Prepare forms and reports. Teach swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluate participants according to program outlines and goals. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge & Abilities Knowledge of: Procedures used in implementing and performing a variety of aquatic activities including lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons and working with people of various ages and abilities in aquatic settings. Recreation and lifesaving tools and equipment. Basic principles of customer service. Ability to: Effectively lead, delegate and oversee day-to-day activities and assignments through instruction and leadership. Use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations. Use equipment used in the aquatics division. Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements. Swim with proficiency and endurance. Perform water rescues, CPR and first aid. React calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Teach proper swimming techniques and water safety to youth and adults. Communicate courteously and effectively with participants and those encountered in the workplace. Prepare required reports and forms. Follow oral and written instructions.
