Description Haverford College Seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Studies (One-Year Appointment). The Visual Studies Program at Haverford College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position for Academic Year 2026-27. We seek an artist/filmmaker/scholar who can teach courses in experimental filmmaking and film/media theory, and who may also contribute electives in areas such as performance, conceptual art, exhibition practice, interactive media, the ethics of AI in digital media culture, or other interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture. This position replaces a faculty member on sabbatical and carries a 5-course teaching load across the year (e.g., 3-2) with no service expectations. The appointment begins July 1, 2026, with classes starting on August 31, 2026. About the Position The successful candidate will teach a mix of production and theory courses, potentially including: Foundations of Filmmaking Experimental or essay film production Topics courses in visual studies, contemporary art, or aesthetics Electives reflecting the candidate's own practice We are especially interested in candidates who approach film as a critical and experimental medium and who can work with students across disciplines in a small liberal arts college environment. The program's learning goals include: Interdisciplinary Rigor: how different disciplines account for seeing, meaning, and representation Visual Literacy: "slow" looking and close analysis of images and media The Ethics of the Visual: the social and political stakes of image culture Critical Making: artistic practice as a form of inquiry Haverford and Bryn Mawr students come to the Visual Studies Program from a variety of disciplines. They minor in either Visual Studies or Visual Studies (Filmmaking Focus). Qualifications Required: MFA or PhD in film, media studies, visual studies, art, or a related field by start date Demonstrated excellence in teaching film/media production and/or theory A record of creative or scholarly work in experimental film, video art, essay film, or related practices Preferred: Experience teaching interdisciplinary or practice-based courses Facility with small-crew or solo filmmaking workflows (digital cinema cameras, sound recording, editing platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud) Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and mentoring students in the setting of a small liberal arts college.
