Job Description

Join Ring's innovative Device Guardians team as a Backend Software Engineer, where you will play a vital role in developing the backend services that manage devices for millions of customers around the globe. As the team in charge of the Device Registry, our core service handling over 1 million transactions per second, your contributions will directly shape the user experience across mobile applications and smart home integrations. In this position, you'll work closely with diverse groups within Ring, including software, firmware, and product teams, utilizing AWS technologies to tackle complex challenges in distributed systems. This role allows you to design solutions that enable real-time device event processing, trigger automated responses like motion-activated lighting, and enhance the configuration experience for our expanding customer base. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement high-throughput backend services that support millions of Ring devices, maintaining over 1M transactions per second with stringent uptime requirements. Create extensible APIs and data models that act as the foundation for Ring's mobile applications and internal services. Promote engineering excellence by establishing best practices within the team. Architect fault-tolerant distributed systems using AWS services, ensuring scalability for thousands to millions of concurrent device operations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to convert complex business needs into technical solutions that enhance customer security and convenience. Lead initiatives focused on operational excellence, including monitoring, alerting, and automated testing to sustain our critical service dependencies. Contribute to technical decision-making, influencing Ring's device platform blueprint and its future capabilities. About The Team: We are the backbone of Ring's device ecosystem, responsible for the critical infrastructure that enables daily operations for other teams. As custodians of customer data at a massive scale, we uphold Amazon's highest security standards, ensuring 99.9%+ service availability that millions trust. Our team is built on a culture of long-term architectural thinking, code reusability, and collaborative problem-solving utilizing a variety of technologies. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 3+ years of professional software development experience outside of internships. 2+ years of experience in designing or architecting systems with an emphasis on design patterns, reliability, and scaling. 1+ years of applicable software development engineer experience or relevant occupation. 1+ years of experience in designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded, or distributed software applications, tools, and systems using C#, C++, Java, or Perl. 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Proficient in programming with at least one software language. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 3+ years of experience with the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations. Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Please note, the base salary range for this role is between $143,700 and $194,400 annually. This will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs), with the final package determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
