Mechanical Design Manager - Construction Location: Pittsburgh, PA About US: Highland Consulting Group is an executive search firm specializing in recruiting top talent within the construction industry. Role Summary: Lead the Mechanical Design team and drive safe, code-compliant engineering execution for heavy industrial design-build projects. General Purpose The Mechanical Design Manager leads mechanical and process engineering teams within a large mechanical contractor. This role provides technical and people leadership and oversees engineering execution for heavy industrial projects across the power, chemical, metals, and oil & gas markets. The Department Manager ensures deliverables meet applicable codes and standards and align with project scope, schedule, budget, safety, and quality objectives. Key Responsibilities Engineering Execution & Quality Direct the planning, creation, review, and approval of engineering deliverables. Lead the application of mechanical and process design principles, codes, and standards. Develop, maintain, and improve engineering procedures, design guides, and technical specifications. Lead project kickoffs, design reviews/gate checks, deliverable milestones, and closeout activities. Leadership & People Development Provide technical oversight, mentorship, and peer review to engineering staff; ensure consistent quality across the team. Plan and coordinate department workload by allocating resources, prioritizing assignments, and reviewing work of direct reports. Strengthen department capability through training plans, knowledge sharing, and professional development. Lead recruiting, selection, and onboarding for department personnel. Communicate and reinforce the principles of the Talent Advantaged Roadmap. Project, Proposal & Site Support Track and report project scope, schedule, budget, and technical risks; drive timely issue resolution. Support proposals with schedule development, staffing plans, and cost/effort estimating. Provide technical support to construction and operating sites, as needed. Demonstrate a collaborative mindset aligned with MTS's design-build business model. Identify and advance opportunities for innovation, standardization, and capability growth. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education & Credentials Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline. 10+ years of heavy industrial engineering/design experience. Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Technical Knowledge Working knowledge of industry-standard design practices, phased engineering delivery, and engineering management. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (ASME, ASTM, API, ASHRAE, etc.) and heavy-industry best practices. Experience developing and maintaining engineering procedures, specifications, and design standards. Proficiency with common analysis tools (e.g., CAESAR II, PV Elite, AFT Arrow or similar) and familiarity with 3D modeling tools (e.g., Plant 3D, Inventor or similar). Leadership & Communication Proven ability to organize, prioritize, review, instruct, and develop direct reports. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization. Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships, both internal and external. Effective technical communicator (written and verbal). Ability to solve practical problems and make sound decisions in situations with limited standardization. Tools Proficient with Microsoft Word; intermediate skills in Excel and Outlook.
