Position Summary The Assistant Controller supports the VP of Finance in managing the financial operations of a vertically integrated real estate development and construction company. This role is designed for a high-potential accounting professional seeking to grow into a full Controller position within 2-3 years. The Assistant Controller will own core accounting processes, compliance, and vendor payment workflows while partnering with construction leadership to ensure accurate job costing and lender reporting. Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations Process and review weekly accounts payable, ensuring accurate coding, approvals, and timely payments Approve routine vendor invoices within established authority limits Maintain vendor compliance, including W-9s, lien waivers, and payment documentation Prepare and reconcile monthly bank and credit card accounts Assist with month-end close activities, including journal entries and account reconciliations Construction & Lender Support Review construction draw packages as a secondary reviewer, ensuring completeness and accuracy Coordinate with the VP of Construction to identify missing documentation or cost discrepancies Support lender reporting requirements and maintain organized backup for audits and inspections Compliance & Risk Management Manage federal, state, and local compliance filings, including: Payroll taxes Sales and use taxes Other regulatory filings as required Track filing deadlines and ensure timely submissions Assist with audit preparation and coordination with external CPA firms Systems & Process Improvement Support the company's transition from Sage 300 CRE to Sage Intacct Document accounting processes and assist in building internal SOPs Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls Growth & Leadership Development Partner closely with the VP of Finance to learn WIP schedules, job cost analysis, and financial reporting Gradually assume greater responsibility over month-end close and financial review Develop toward full Controller responsibility within 2-3 years Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance 2-5 years of accounting experience (construction or real estate preferred) CPA highly preferred (or actively pursuing) Experience with job cost accounting strongly preferred Sage 300 CRE and/or Sage Intacct experience a plus Strong attention to detail and deadline-driven mindset Comfortable communicating with project managers and leadership
