Salary: $15.63 - $21.63 Hourly Location : Joshua, TX Job Type: Part-Time Department: Parks Opening Date: 02/02/2026 FLSA: Non-Exempt Position Summary The Parks Maintenance Worker performs technical and manual labor tasks related to the maintenance and repair of City parks and facilities. Responsibilities include mowing, landscaping, tree removal, brush chipping, irrigation system repairs, playground maintenance, chemical applications, and general facility upkeep. This position operates a variety of hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment to ensure parks and recreation areas remain clean, safe, and accessible to the public. Essential Job FuntionsMow, trim, and maintain turf areas, landscaping, and dirt work in parks and athletic fields. Prepare and maintain athletic fields, including lining, base setting, and facility cleaning. Operate light and heavy equipment, including backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors, mowers, trenchers, bucket trucks, and dump trucks. Operate lawn maintenance equipment such as small tractors, riding mowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, and trimmers. Perform chemical applications, including herbicide and pesticide spraying in compliance with regulations. Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems and landscaping at City parks and facilities. Conduct routine inspections of municipal parks, ensuring playground equipment, restrooms, and park structures are safe and in proper working order. Perform general carpentry, mechanical repairs, and minor plumbing in park restrooms and amenities. Remove litter, debris, and graffiti from parks and public spaces. Conduct pond maintenance, including dredging, chemical applications, and compliance with environmental regulations. Identify and isolate irrigation system leaks and repair broken lines. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment as needed. Assist in community parks and recreation programs, including department-sponsored events such as Movies in the Park, 4th of July, and KidFish. Provide public service support during inclement weather by placing barricades, cutting fallen trees, and setting up warning signs for ice, high water, and storm damage. Work holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed; subject to after-hours emergency call-outs. Rotate on-call duty for weekend coverage of city parks and emergency conditions. Communicate effectively and courteously with citizens, vendors, and staff. Maintain regular and reliable attendance. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of safety protocols for handling chemicals, power tools, and equipment. Proficiency in landscaping, irrigation, and turf management techniques. Understanding of basic construction, carpentry, and mechanical repairs. Ability to operate, maintain, and repair hand and power tools. Familiarity with regulations, policies, and procedures related to park operations. Strong problem-solving skills to identify maintenance issues and recommend solutions. Ability to read maps, interpret diagrams, and follow written instructions. Effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with staff, vendors, and the public. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with the public, city staff, and external partners. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word and Outlook) for record-keeping and communication. PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered. Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record. Must pass a pre-employment drug test, criminal background check, and MVR check. PHYSICAL AND NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS This role involves a combination of indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions. The Parks Maintenance Worker must frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 100 lbs., with the ability to push or pull up to 100 lbs. of maintenance tools and equipment. Duties may require manual dexterity for operating machinery and handling small tools. The position demands multitasking, adaptability, and time management to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, extreme weather conditions, and loud noise from power equipment and traffic. Emergency on-call hours may be required. WORKING CONDITIONS & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Work is primarily outdoors, with exposure to extreme heat, cold, hazardous chemicals, and wildlife. Safety hazards include equipment-related risks, exposure to herbicides and pesticides, and encounters with stinging or biting insects. Employees must adhere to all safety protocols and wear protective equipment as required. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Office equipment (computer, phone, fax, copier, printer, scanner). Park maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers, tractors, backhoes, skid-loaders, tillers, aerators, chippers, and chainsaws. Hand and power tools required for construction, landscaping, and facility maintenance. OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES This position requires strong reading, writing, and mathematical skills to interpret maps, maintenance schedules, and reports while ensuring compliance with state and local regulations. The Parks Maintenance Worker must be a self-starter, capable of working independently while maintaining compliance with city policies and safety standards. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are necessary to interact professionally with citizens, city personnel, and contractors. The Parks Maintenance Worker may also assist in record-keeping, tracking inventory, and recommending improvements to park operations. This position is not eligible for benefits.
