Position Overview: The Energy Delivery Specialist is responsible for the safe, timely, and compliant delivery of refined fuels, propane, lubricants, and related energy products to agricultural, commercial, and residential customers. This role operates commercial motor vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements and ensures adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations including the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The Energy Delivery Specialist represents the cooperative in a professional manner, prioritizing safety, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and exceptional customer service. Key Responsibilities: 1. Delivery Operations: Responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely transportation and delivery of refined fuels, propane, lubricants, and other energy products to agricultural, commercial, and residential customers throughout the cooperative's service territory. This includes conducting pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of tanker trucks and related equipment in compliance with FMCSA and DOT requirements. Verifies product type, quantity, and delivery location prior to transfer, ensuring proper placement and preventing cross-contamination. Operates pumping systems, meters, valves, and hoses to safely transfer product while continuously monitoring tank levels during delivery. Performs visual and mechanical leak checks on hoses, fittings, valves, meters, and connection points before, during, and after product transfer, immediately reporting irregularities, pressure loss, or suspected leaks in accordance with cooperative policy and regulatory requirements. Accurately completes and submits fuel delivery tickets, customer order tickets, billing documentation, and compliance records in a timely manner to support prompt and accurate customer billing. Maintains professional communication with the Energy Director, Energy Administrator, and customers, particularly during peak agricultural and seasonal demand periods. This position requires the ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to operational needs during evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned. Must be available to support customer service demands, emergency response situations, and time-sensitive operational requirements associated with energy delivery, installation, and safety-related service calls. On-call responsibilities may include after-hours travel, extended work periods, and response to urgent customer or facility issues in accordance with cooperative policy. (25%) 2. Installation & Service: Assists with and performs installation, setup, and service of bulk fuel tanks, propane tanks, pumps, meters, regulators, hoses, and dispensing systems at customer and cooperative sites. Responsibilities include coordinating tank placement, assembling and connecting equipment, ensuring proper grounding and bonding, and conducting pressure testing and leak checks prior to system activation. Performs routine service and preventative maintenance such as replacing worn hoses or fittings, tightening connections, and troubleshooting minor mechanical or meter irregularities. Supports environmental protection efforts through spill prevention practices, secondary containment awareness, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards. (25%) 3. Compliance & Risk Management: Maintains safety-sensitive operational compliance with DOT, hazardous materials transportation regulations, and OSHA safety standards. Requires active CDL licensure with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements and participation in required drug and alcohol testing programs. Follows hours-of-service regulations, inspection requirements, and hazardous material documentation procedures. Reports accidents, spills, leaks, near misses, or environmental concerns immediately per cooperative policy. Participates in ongoing safety and job required trainings, uses required personal protective equipment, and supports a proactive safety culture by identifying hazards and recommending safety improvements. (15%) 4. Customer Service & Teamwork: Supports customer retention and cooperative growth by delivering reliable, professional, and responsive service to existing and prospective energy customers. This includes identifying business opportunities, supporting cooperative energy product promotion, and assisting with service expansion opportunities such as tank installations, equipment upgrades, or additional product offerings. Build and maintain positive customer relationships by monitoring tank usage patterns, communicating refill or service recommendations, and responding promptly to customer needs. Customer interactions must demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, safety awareness, and accountability. Supports cooperative-wide operations by assisting other departments-such as grain, agronomy, and seed-during peak seasons, staffing shortages, or special projects as operationally needed. Contributes to operational improvement by sharing feedback and supporting workflow efficiency. (15%) 5. Equipment, Facility & Inventory Maintenance: Performs daily inspection, cleaning, and preventative maintenance of trucks, trailers, pumps, hoses, meters, storage systems, and related delivery equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Maintains cooperative facilities and work areas in a clean, organized, and operationally safe condition. Duties may include basic facility upkeep, site organization, minor repairs within competency, snow removal, grounds maintenance, and reporting significant maintenance needs. Assists with records and monitoring and control of energy products by performing tank level checks, reconciling physical product levels with system records, and participating in periodic inventory counts and product reconciliation activities to support accurate asset accounting and minimize product loss. (15%) 6. Other: Contributes to additional company and team efforts, projects and initiatives as needed. Other duties as assigned. (5%) Education: Required - High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: Preferred - Prior energy delivery, fuel transportation, or related operational roles is preferred but not required; on-the-job training will be provided for qualified candidates. License/Certification: Required - Valid Driver's License. Required - CDL with tanker and hazmat endorsements. Required - DOT Medical Certification required and must be maintained in compliance with FMCSA regulations. Required - CTEP certification for propane delivery and cylinder filling, required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Safe transportation, handling, storage, and delivery of fuels, propane, lubricants, and other energy products. Hazardous materials transportation requirements enforced by the FMCSA and the DOT. Safety regulations, workplace standards, and environmental protection practices, including OSHA requirements and spill prevention measures. Propane and fuel system safety, including CTEP standards for cylinder filling and delivery. Customer service principles and cooperative business operations. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for delivery, installation, and equipment operation. Inventory tracking, work logging, and digital documentation using smartphones, tablets, and computers. Safe operation of commercial delivery vehicles and associated pumping, metering, and dispensing equipment. Conducting inspections, leak detection, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on delivery systems and installed equipment. Accurately completing delivery tickets, customer order tickets, billing records, and compliance documentation in a timely manner. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills when handling, transferring, and documenting products. Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to interact with customers, coworkers, and vendors. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify and resolve operational, equipment, or delivery issues. Ability to operate GPS, tablets, and other digital tools for route management, delivery tracking, and field operations. Time management and prioritization skills to balance workloads, meet deadlines, and adapt to seasonal demand. Ability to interpret delivery instructions, safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and customer requests. Ability to reason through operational situations and make sound safety-focused decisions in dynamic environments. Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments, including energy, grain, agronomy, and seed. Physically able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. or more, stand for extended periods, climb, and perform labor-intensive tasks outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to maintain professionalism and provide reliable, customer-focused service under time-sensitive or high-demand situations. Commitment to safe work practices, hazard reporting, and promoting a proactive safety culture. Willingness to obtain and maintain all required licenses and certifications, including CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements and propane or pesticide certifications as applicable. Adaptable to seasonal workload changes, varying weather conditions, and extended work hours during peak periods. Ability to participate in an on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to respond to operational, customer service, or emergency service needs as assigned. Environmental Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation. Duties may occur during early mornings, evenings, or extended hours during peak seasonal periods. Exposure to fuel products, propane, lubricants, and associated odors or fumes during delivery, installation, and maintenance activities. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when handling hazardous materials, performing service work, or conducting maintenance tasks in accordance with safety standards established by OSHA, EPA, and DOT. Work may occur near moving vehicles, heavy equipment, storage systems, and operational facilities where noise levels may require hearing protection. Exposure to dust, airborne particulates, fumes, and environmental contaminants associated with fuel storage, facility maintenance, and delivery operations. Physical work surfaces may be uneven, wet, icy, muddy, or slippery, increasing the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Duties may require working near commercial traffic, agricultural equipment, and bulk storage sites. Periodic entry into confined or restricted spaces may be required when performing inspections, installation work, or maintenance activities, following all required safety procedures and permitting requirements. Handling, transportation, and storage of hazardous materials must be performed in compliance with federal, state, and cooperative safety regulations. Travel between cooperative facilities, customer locations, and rural service areas is required and may involve driving on rural or unpaved roads. Potential exposure to agricultural pests, insects, rodents, and other wildlife common in rural environments. Physical Demands and Requirements: Strenuous - lifting of 75 # or more: Ability to stand, walk, or move continuously for extended periods during plant, warehouse, field, and delivery operations. Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching while operating or maintaining equipment, connecting hoses, and handling fuel or propane products. Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of items up to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs. with assistance or mechanical aids. Ability to climb ladders, steps, trucks, or equipment to access tanks, machinery, or elevated platforms safely. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate tools, controls, meters, valves, and precision equipment for delivery, installation, and maintenance tasks. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery associated with energy delivery and tank service operations. Visual acuity and depth perception sufficient to read labels, digital displays, gauges, and work documentation accurately. Hearing ability is adequate to communicate effectively in person and via radios, alarms, or headsets in noisy environments. Ability to wear and use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, respirators, hearing protection, and protective clothing. Physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks, manage hoses and tanks, and sustain productivity in both indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to maintain balance and stability while working on uneven, slippery, or rough surfaces at facilities, customer sites, or in the field. Capacity to detect and identify odors associated with fuels, propane, chemicals, and other energy products for safety purposes. Ability to enter, exit, and maneuver safely around vehicles, confined spaces, storage tanks, and field environments. Willingness and ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity. Tolerance for exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, and agricultural particulates with appropriate safety precautions. Ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, and alternate shifts during seasonal or peak operations. Ability to respond to on-call duties promptly and safely, including travel to customer or facility sites as required.
