Position Title: Director of Inclusive Education Department: Instructional Reports to: Vice President of Inclusive Education Status: Exempt, Full-Time Who We Are: Bright Star Schools is a free, publicly funded and open enrollment non-profit organization with nine public charters in urban Los Angeles. Role Summary: The Director of Inclusive Education is essential to the organization's Inclusive (Special) Education program, overseeing IE initiatives and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations to provide support tailored to students' individual needs. This role collaborates with the Vice President of IE, School Site Administrators, Inclusive Specialist Teachers (ISTs), Special Day Class (SDC) Teachers, and Related Service Providers to advance compliance and inclusive instruction across nine schools. Additionally, the Director partners with various departments within the School Support Team (SST) to implement and monitor strategic initiatives. The Director is responsible for building staff capacity both onsite and remotely, focusing on ongoing compliance through data monitoring and enhancing accessible instruction. This includes observing lessons, providing feedback, sharing research-based strategies, modeling effective practices, assisting with instructional planning, establishing system-wide policies, and facilitating PD What You'll Do include the following, as well as, other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned. VISION & STRATEGIC PLANNING Work with the VP of IE and CIEO to develop a shared vision for Bright Star's IE Program Develop a 3-5 year strategic implementation plan to strengthen and expand Bright Star's IE Programming and embedded supports in collaboration with VP of IE and CIO Conduct a needs and strengths assessment and/or analyze cluster and district-wide data to inform goal setting, training, and supports Align Inclusive Education initiatives with Bright Star's measurable student outcomes and strategic priorities. Instructional Excellence & Inclusive Practices Build system-wide capacity for high-quality, inclusive instruction. Observe lessons, provide feedback, model research-based strategies, and support instructional planning. Strengthen differentiation, accommodations, and access to grade-level content. Partner with instructional leaders to align curriculum, assessment, and intervention supports for students with disabilities. Ensure master schedules reflect appropriate service delivery and inclusion structures. Professional Development Develop and implement a yearlong Scope & Sequence for network and school-site Inclusive Education professional development, including facilitation of PD that strengthens staff skills and practice. Collaborate with internal and external partners to design and deliver high-quality learning experiences such as Summer Institutes, beginning-of-year trainings, organization-wide PDs, and communities of practice. Provide targeted training for administrators on special education compliance and inclusive instructional leadership. Maintain SafetyCare trainer certification, deliver required training, and manage accurate records of staff certifications. Mentor Inclusive Education teachers through induction programs. Compliance & Data Monitoring Monitor compliance across all school sites using CDE and district reports, and implement systems for tracking, sharing, and addressing compliance requirements. Develop tools and systems that enable schools to independently monitor and address compliance requirements. Partner with the VP of IE, Data Team, Enrollment Team, and site teams to support Child Find processes, CALPADS monitoring, and accurate data reporting. Serve as a liaison between school sites, Charter Operated Programs, legal teams, and organizational leadership, including co-leading district/state audits and corrective actions (e.g., DVR, Annual Oversight, CDE audits). Support complex legal and compliance cases (e.g., mediation, due process, MDRs). School Site & Student Support Co-develop and implement IE PLC scope and sequence with Lead ISTs, providing site-based support through observations, coaching, and tailored professional learning. Support school leaders and IE teams with IEP implementation, service scheduling, onboarding of ISTs/SDC teachers, and changes of placement to improve effectiveness and student outcomes. Provide consultative and technical support for complex cases (e.g., mediation, due process, MDRs), serving as a liaison with non-public agencies and external partners. Assist schools with IE grant applications, program implementation, and development of clear resources aligned to Federal, District, and BSS compliance expectations. Strengthen instructional and case management practices through regular site engagement, IEP meeting support, and continuous capacity-building efforts. Partner with Community Schools and Family Engagement teams to strengthen inclusive family partnerships. Cross-functional collaboration Collaborate with school administrators, Content Directors, and the VP of IE to implement inclusive instructional resources, curriculum, assessments, and best practices across IE settings. Lead regular IE leadership meetings and participate in walkthroughs to ensure instructional alignment, consistency, and shared expectations. Align behavioral supports and interventions with the School Culture Team and network BCBA to better serve students with disabilities who have behavioral needs. Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to drive instructional decisions, facilitate KPI sessions, and improve academic outcomes for students with disabilities. What You'll Bring: At least five years of successful experience in Special Education teaching or School Psychology, including knowledge of Special Education law, LAUSD compliance practices, and Welligent A minimum of four years of leadership experience, with a strong instructional background in K-12 curriculum, inclusive practices, differentiation, and accommodations Experience designing and facilitating PD and supporting adult learners through coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize projects, solve problems, and support multiple schools and cross-functional teams Demonstrated growth mindset, experience with behavior interventions, and a commitment to continuous learning for self, colleagues, and students PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to travel between nine school sites across Los Angeles (Mid City/West Adams, Koreatown, and Valley) Normal, routine levels of activity related to bending, carrying, climbing, hearing, lifting, reaching, sitting, standing, vision, and walking, and may also involve above-average levels of activity at times that can't always be anticipated What We Offer: Demonstrated growth mindset, experience with behavior interventions, and a commitment to continuous learning for self, colleagues, and students.
