Position: Assistant Professor Music/Director of Choral & Vocal StudiesDepartment: College of Arts & SciencesStatus: Full Time - 9 MonthPosition Summary: Campbell University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor Music/Director of Choral and Vocal Studies to provide artistic, pedagogical, and administrative leadership for the university's vocal/choral program. The successful candidate will be an accomplished choral conductor and educator who is deeply committed to excellence in teaching, teacher preparation, and the holistic development of students. Consistent with Campbell University's mission to prepare students for purposeful lives of leadership and service, the Director of Choral Activities will cultivate musical artistry, professional competence, ethical leadership, and a spirit of service. The position emphasizes undergraduate education, preparation of future music educators, and meaningful engagement with schools, churches, and the surrounding community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct the university's premier choral ensembles including the University Choir, Campbell Voices, and Choral Society; additional ensemble conducting may be required as aligned with departmental needs. Ability to provide diverse programming for our choral ensembles. Specifically, a vision for advancing the traveling choral ensembles in scope of style and reach. Creativity in programming that may include different approaches such as a jazz/pop/show-choir oriented structure for performances. This includes the ability to provide musical leadership in those diverse styles and not only within the stylistically traditional choral canon. Provide artistic, curricular, and administrative leadership for the choral program, fostering musical excellence, student growth, and a supportive learning environment. Teach applied lessons and undergraduate courses in conducting, choral/vocal literature, diction classes, choral/vocal techniques, and choral/vocal pedagogy, with a strong emphasis on preparing students for careers in music education and/or ministry-related musical leadership. Contribute to the music education curriculum through courses such as secondary choral methods, rehearsal techniques, and applied conducting. Recruit, mentor, and advise undergraduate students, supporting both their professional preparation and personal development. Build and sustain strong partnerships with regional schools, choral directors, churches, and community organizations to support recruitment, experiential learning, and service-oriented outreach. Collaborate closely with faculty across the Department of Music and College of Arts & Sciences to advance interdisciplinary learning and the educational mission of the university. Maintain an active professional profile as a conductor, clinician, educator, or scholar appropriate to rank. Engage in service to the department, college, and university, contributing positively to a collegial, mission-driven academic community. Support and affirm the university mission and values of Campbell University through teaching, mentoring, professional conduct, and community engagement. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned. Education/Experience: Doctorate (Ph.D. or DMA) in conducting, choral music education or Vocal Pedagogy required. ABD considered. Academic background in Vocal Pedagogy and Music Education preferred. Significant secondary teaching experience, particularly in choral or vocal music preferred. Demonstrated success in preparing future music educators and choral directors. Experience recruiting and retaining undergraduate students. Experience as an honor choir, festival, or All-State clinician. Active involvement in professional organizations such as ACDA and NAfME and NATS. Experience developing outreach initiatives that strengthen connections between university, schools, community colleges, churches, and the broader community. Potential experience as Music Director of Musicals desired. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels. Maintain strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential. Ability and willingness to recruit frequently at High Schools, Community Colleges, Churches, and Music Conventions. Ability and willingness to conduct audiences in congregational style singing. Ability and willingness to arrange choir tours to churches. high schools, community colleges and community organizations for the purposes of recruitment, service and ministry. Ability and willingness to arrange logistics and perform with university ensembles for university/community events. Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials and the public. Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people. Exercise independent judgment in complex and new situations. Willing to work in a changing environment.
