Volunteer Public Guardians make a profound difference to benefit the life of highly vulnerable adults. When a person cannot legally make safe choices for themselves and have no others to help them in making decisions, a Volunteer Deputy Guardian steps in to help. Deputy Guardians receive education, training, and ongoing mentoring from the OPG program, learning to: Develop a rapport and a working relationship with the clients when visiting at least once per month. Learn and evaluate the person’s needs, issues, and desires. Participate in planning, giving consent for medical treatment and other services. Monitor and advocate for the rights and dignity of the client. Work with care staff, service providers and medical providers to ensure appropriate care and services. Monitor client’s care, staffing and home/facility conditions. Promote understanding and trust between client, staff and the Oregon Public Guardian and Conservator. Maintain confidentiality as required by law. Report cases of suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services as required by Program policy. Submit required monthly reports as per OPG program policy. Attend required trainings and meetings. Sign a 2-year commitment to serve the Program
