Speech-Language Pathology Assistant The job of Speech & Language Pathology Assistant is done for the purpose/s of assisting in providing therapeutic services to students with speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders, under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. The Speech & Language Pathologist Assistant is responsible for implementing therapy plans, collecting data, maintaining documentation, and supporting students in achieving their communication goals. This job reports to Director of Special Services Essential Functions Assists speech and language pathologist in developing student IEP for the purpose of providing appropriate services. Attends scheduled staff developments for the purpose of maintaining best practices. Conducts speech, language, and communication exercises with students individually or in groups for the purpose of promoting student progress. Conducts speech and language screenings, without interpretation, using age-appropriate screening protocols developed by the supervising Speech & Language Pathologist for the purpose of identifying students who may require speech therapy services. Creates follows and/or implements documented treatment plans and/or protocols developed by the supervising Speech & Language Pathologist for the purpose of promoting student progress toward IEP goals and objectives. Develops instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities for the purpose of individualizing therapy. Directs therapy services for the purpose of improving students' articulation, phonology, fluency, and other communication skills. Documents student progress toward meeting established objectives and reports the information to the supervising Speech & Language Pathologist for the purpose of monitoring progress toward IEP goals. Establishes schedules for assigned students according to service minutes established in the IEP plan for the purpose of maintaining compliance. Implements programming augmentative and alternative communications (AAC) devices for the purpose of promoting student progress. Maintains appropriate student behavior between activities for the purpose of maintaining focus of the therapy objectives. Maintains accurate student records, tallying data, preparing charts, records, graphs and reports for the purpose of monitoring student progress toward IEP goals. Observes and reports significant behavioral patterns or problems to the Speech & Language Pathologist for the purpose of providing ongoing services appropriate for the student's current level of functioning. Prepares therapy equipment and/or materials (e.g. charts, pictures, word lists, and other related items, etc.) for the purpose of providing therapy specific to individualized speech/language needs. Responds to inquiries and concerns regarding student communication issues (e.g. parents, teachers, staff, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Deal effectively with attitudes and behaviors of students; use a variety of screening tools and protocols; appropriately administer and score screening tools; provide effective implementation of therapy objectives; interact and communicate effectively with children and adults from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; work independently with minimal supervision; communicate effectively in oral and written form; operate a computer and use standard software applications; react with flexibility and sensitivity to changing situations and needs; organize and prioritize work; effectively carry out written and oral instructions; maintain cooperative work relationships. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Speech and language pathology equipment, materials, and procedures; normal speech, language, and hearing development; language disorders and rehabilitation; articulation disorders and rehabilitation; acquired disorders and rehabilitation; learning patterns in children; student behavior management techniques and strategies; learning difficulties of children with special education needs; English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar; basic math skills; routine office procedures and recordkeeping; standard software applications. ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Responsibility Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; monitoring budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services. Work Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required. Education (Minimum): Bachelors degree in job-related area.
