This dual-role position provides direct school-based nursing services while also supporting district-wide health services leadership. The role ensures safe, compliant, and responsive health care for students and staff, while developing, coordinating, and overseeing health programs, protocols, and nursing support across schools. The position serves as a clinical expert, consultant to school administrators, and liaison to community health partners to promote student wellness, safety, and access to care. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: SCHOOL-BASED NURSE Provide first aid, skilled nursing, and emergency care to students and staff independently, in compliance with legal, professional, and confidentiality standards. Assess student health needs related to illness or injury, address immediate concerns, and initiate follow-up care and referrals as appropriate. Communicate student health status and needs to parents/guardians and school personnel. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized health care plans for students with chronic health conditions or medical fragility in collaboration with families and stakeholders. Identify and assess concerns related to student safety, neglect, or abuse and make required referrals in compliance with state law and district policy while protecting student privacy. Administer medications and treatments in accordance with state laws, district policies, and physician orders. Conduct state-mandated health screenings and identify health-related barriers to learning. Initiate referrals to community health resources for failed screenings and assist families in securing follow-up care. Provide routine first aid and nursing care to staff injured or ill at work and assist with workers' compensation reporting per district guidelines. Report health and safety concerns to the school principal or designated administrator to support a safe and positive learning environment. Provide ongoing health education to students, parents, and staff to promote wellness and prevent illness and injury. Serve as the health team specialist on evaluation teams as needed to support IEPs and 504 plans and assist with recommended health-related accommodations. Review student health records annually and communicate with families to establish or update required health care plans. Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of clinic visits and nursing care in accordance with legal and professional standards. Monitor and ensure compliance with immunization and physical examination requirements as mandated by state law and district policy. Prepare and submit required state and district health reports in a timely manner. Monitor, report, and assist in controlling communicable diseases in accordance with Tennessee Department of Health and district procedures. Provide training and supervision for unlicensed assistive personnel in accordance with state and district guidelines, as applicable. Serve as the leader of the school's First Responder Team. Collaborate with nutrition services and physical education staff to promote fitness and healthy eating for students and staff. Partner with the district nursing coordinator to develop, review, and revise district health policies, goals, and procedures. Order and maintain medical supplies to support effective clinic operations. Participate in continuing education to maintain licensure and promote professional growth. Perform other related duties as assigned by the nursing supervisor or school principal. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: DISTRICT NURSE SUPERVISOR Develop, implement, and oversee district-wide school health protocols related to student illness, injury, communicable diseases, and catastrophic health events. Provide clinical and operational support to school nurses as needed to ensure continuity of health services. Serve as a consultant to school principals regarding the supervision and support of site-based nursing staff. Maintain ongoing communication with community health agencies and coordinate referrals and required reporting. Provide medical guidance and recommendations to district and system administrators. Coordinate special health screenings, monitor compliance with immunization laws, and provide required status reports. Develop, manage, and monitor the annual health services budget. Collaborate with school administrators to interview, select, and hire school nursing staff as needed. Coordinate alternate coverage and daily scheduling to ensure medical services are provided during nurse absences when substitutes are unavailable. Oversee the maintenance, accuracy, and confidentiality of district medical records. Assist in the development, evaluation, and revision of health services policies and procedures. Provide orientation and onboarding for newly hired and substitute nurses. Serve as a health services consultant to other departments within the school system, as needed. Coordinate with community agencies to support the delivery of health services for students and employees. Prepare and submit health services reports and data as requested by district administration and state or federal Departments of Health and Education. Coordinate the requisition, distribution, and inventory management of medical supplies for schools. QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse, licensed by the State of Tennessee Minimum of 3 years nursing experience.
