This role plays a key part in design evaluation, construction engineering, QA/QC, and ensuring compliance with TxDOT specifications, plans, and standards. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who can support field operations, solve problems quickly, and ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to specification. Position Requirements Engineering & Technical Support Interpret civil, structural, and roadway plans, specifications, and TxDOT standards. Provide engineering guidance for grading, drainage, utilities, paving, structures, etc. Prepare or review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and engineering calculations. Assist in design-build or value-engineering efforts to optimize cost and constructability. Support mix designs, material testing interpretation, and specification compliance (including Tex-method familiarity). Project Support & Field Coordination Work directly with project managers, superintendents, and field crews to solve construction challenges. Provide on-site engineering direction for layout, tolerances, drainage, elevations, traffic control, and structures. Monitor and document work progress, quality, materials, and compliance with project requirements. Review survey data, verify quantities, and support accurate pay estimates. Quality Assurance / Quality Control Oversee QC programs, testing interpretation, and compliance with project specifications. Review laboratory and field testing results (e.g., Proctors, density, concrete breaks, asphalt results). Ensure materials, procedures, and workmanship meet contract requirements. Assist with developing corrective-action plans when required. Project Documentation & Administration Prepare engineering reports, calculations, and technical memos. Support project recordkeeping: RFIs, design clarifications, submittals, daily reports, as-built documentation. Assist the project team with cost evaluations, change orders, and schedule impacts. Safety & Compliance Ensure all engineering recommendations comply with OSHA, TxDOT, and industry standards. Support job hazard analysis (JHAs), safe work plans, and safety-driven engineering decisions. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field required. Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Texas 3-10+ years of experience in civil, roadway, heavy-highway, or infrastructure construction (TxDOT experience preferred). Strong understanding of TxDOT specifications, Tex-methods, and construction standards. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and engineering software; experience with survey systems (Trimble) preferred. Ability to read and interpret complex plans, standards, and technical documents. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work in the field and adapt to rapidly changing jobsite conditions. Preferred Skills Experience with hot-mix asphalt, concrete paving, structures, and subgrade treatments. Understanding of construction equipment, production rates, and heavy-civil operations. Experience coordinating with TxDOT inspectors and area office engineers. Ability to support scheduling, cost analysis, and constructability reviews. Knowledge of drones, photogrammetry, or survey data management (Propeller, TBC) is a plus.
