Job Summary Provides high quality physics instruction. Participates in curriculum development, educational assessments, and course alignments; maintains classrooms and labs in compliance with safety requirements and reports any lab/field equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs. Works with the dean and colleagues to improve student learning experiences. Essential Duties Instructs students in a classroom, lab, online, learning center or other setting (such as field sites) as appropriate. Teaches courses with a primary focus on physics. Creates a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds. Convenes classes, labs, and examinations on time and as scheduled. Provides opportunities for course-related student interactions before or after class, virtually, in person, or through office hours where facilities and schedules permit. Adheres to all College polices, practices, and timelines related to evaluation and grading. Structures classes and curriculum to correspond with the overall program objectives; prepares clear objectives for students each course. Maintains and revises curriculum to maintain currency. Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials as appropriate. Incorporates the latest classroom technology, when available and appropriate, into instructional activities. Participates in, and collects data for, educational assessment as directed by the department, division, and College. Ensures and emphasizes safe working and classroom conditions and practices. Provides for the safety of student and staff and the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate. Reports any lab equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs. Understands and abides by College policies and regulations and other policies, procedures and materials as required or directed. Collaborates with faculty and staff from other departments and divisions to promote communication, coordinate programs, and support student success. Prepares clear learning outcomes for each course and informs students of learning outcomes in a course syllabus. Participates in college service and activities outside direct instruction, such as registration, curriculum development, advising, strategic planning, and educational assessment. Supports student recruitment, placement, and retention. Keeps professionally current by participating in professional development and other activities; maintains current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation. Maintains active liaison with high schools, universities, business and industry or external agencies and assist the dean with program advisory committees as appropriate. Attends division, department, and committee meetings and in-service programs. Additional Duties Performs all other duties as assigned. Minimum and Desired Qualifications Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.) Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or related field OR a master's degree and 24 graduate credits in physics, astronomy, or related field Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practices and service activities Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience at the community college level Knowledge of open educational resources (OER) materials and experience utilizing OER materials in class. Additional Qualifications and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to work evenings and a flexible schedule as needed Ability to teach online courses and utilize necessary technology Ability to manage and engage students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels in the classroom, laboratory, and field environment Ability to use high impact teaching practices in a variety of courses. Ability to coordinate and budget for lab purchases and instructional supply needs Ability to manage student outcomes related to all classes taught Ability to teach courses in accordance with college catalog, schedule of classes, course outlines, course syllabi, and any departmental guidelines Knowledge of appropriate teaching methods and documentation Knowledge of open educational resources (OER) materials and experience utilizing OER materials in class. Working Conditions and Important Information Working Conditions Work is typically performed in both a classroom/lab and field setting, but online instruction may be involved as needed. This position may be eligible for remote work on a hybrid basis. Any remote work requires prior approval and must comply with MHCC Remote Work policies and administrative regulations. Remote work must be within the states of Oregon or Washington. Salary Placement Initial salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws. No initial salary placement will exceed Step 5. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience (including unpaid and volunteer experience) in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire. COLLEGE PAID BENEFITS Health Benefit OptionsMHCC is a member of the Oregon Educators Benefit Board (OEBB) which administers Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), Long Term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Plan (EAP). Health insurance plan coverage will begin on the first day of the month following the first day of employment for a faculty member. If the first working day for a faculty member falls between the 1st and the 14th of the month, the College will provide a stipend equivalent to half of the insurance premium for the plan the faculty member selects, payable in the first paycheck after that selection is made. Important Retirement Information:Make sure you are enrolled in the medical, dental, vision and/or optional plans you want when you retire. Retirement is not considered a Qualified Status Change (QSC) so you cannot add or change plans at the time of retirement. In order to ensure that a spouse/domestic partner and/or eligible dependent can be covered when you retire you will need to enroll them on MHCC's policy at the open enrollment period prior to your retirement date even though they may be covered under another policy. Coverage for domestic partners is a taxable benefit under IRS guidelines. Appropriate taxes will be deducted from your payroll. Other College Paid Insurances Life Insurance Coverage = Two (2) times the basic contract salary (rounded to the nearest $1,000). not to exceed $300,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage = Two (2) times the basic contract salary (rounded to the nearest $1,000). not to exceed $300,000 Long Term Disability (LTD) Approved benefit claims begin after 90-day elimination period. Maximum benefit is 66 2/3 of monthly salary; benefit may be adjusted based on other income received by retirement benefits. Public Employees Retirement Plan (PERS) Consistent with PERS rules, the employee contributes 6% of their gross salary into an Individual Account Program (IAP) with PERS. The contribution is set up automatically. At the time of retirement, based on one of the following programs, a monthly pension benefit is calculated. Please refer the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) website for detailed information on retirement benefits: Public Employees Retirement System - Tier One/Tier Two Hired by a PERS employer before August 28, 2003 and have an active account. Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan - OPSRP Hired on or after August 28, 2003 and do not have active account in the PERS Program. Tuition Waiver Plan The College will maintain the current tuition waiver plan for faculty members, their spouses/domestic partners and their eligible dependents eligible through age 23. Faculty members and their spouses/domestic partners will pay only course specific fees. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) MHCC's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is through Reliant Behavioral Health (RBH) which provides services to help people privately resolve problems that may interfere with work, family, and other important areas of life. The EAP provides FREE (no charge for utilization) and confidential services to employees and their dependents, living at or away from home, and all household members, related or not. MHCC employees, spouses/domestic partner, dependents and their eligible household members have five (5) free EAP services per new issue, including relationship, family, stress, anxiety, and other common challenges. Employees must get a referral from the EAP for each issue for services to be covered. Use of MHCC Swimming Pool The College will provide a swim pass for faculty members, their spouses/domestic partners and their dependents through age 23. Sick Leave A faculty member shall receive a credit of ten (10) days of sick leave upon initial employment, and thereafter shall accrue sick leave at the rate of ten (10) days for working the three (3) terms during the contract year. A faculty member who works a fourth term in the summer shall receive one (1) sick leave day for each five-week session or equivalent, up to a maximum of two (2) sick leave days. Holidays A faculty member who works a fifty percent (50%) or greater instructional load in a term is eligible for paid holidays that fall within that term.
