Posting Details Applicant View of Posting Posting Number 4147P Position Title Maintenance Technician II - 955/Forestry Department Parks & Recreation Job Code 02398 FLSA Status Non-Exempt Union Code/Affiliation Local 955 Division PMC Job Description Summary The purpose of this job is to design and maintain the City of Columbia's parks, nature areas, trail system, tree-scaping, and landscaping in accordance with urban forestry maintenance principles and practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description Performs maintenance on trees in the City's public areas by planting, pruning, mulching, watering, and administering disease treatments. Conducts tree risk assessments and assist with the removal of trees on city park property, along city trail easements, and in downtown tree wells. Builds and maintains the City's pedways, footpaths, and trail systems. Performs maintenance on the City's nature areas by cultivating plant ecosystems, control of non-native and invasive plant species, and conducting prairie and forest restoration and health management activities. Researches and procures materials, supplies, and equipment. Maintains detailed and accurate records. Provides customer service to patrons. Operates and maintains light, medium, and heavy motorized equipment. Trains staff and volunteers as assigned; conducts public outreach. Participates in continuing education and training as required. Assists with snow removal during inclement weather. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others. Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be consideredEducation and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Associate or technical degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Parks and Recreation, construction, or related field preferred. 1 to 3 years' experience in forestry, landscaping, grounds maintenance or related work. Licenses or Certifications Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification. Missouri Pesticide License within 6 months of hire. International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist Certification preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this positionKnowledge of: Urban forestry practices, trail system design and maintenance, prairie and forest restoration and management. Standard practices and methods of operation of various hand tools and landscaping and forestry equipment such as saddle tree climbing techniques, aerial lifts/bucket trucks, tree spades, wood chippers, dump trucks, and skid loaders with attachments. Work site and personal safety related to Arboriculture, particularly those outlined in the ANSI Z133 Safety Standards. Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools, equipment and forestry related pesticides and herbicides. Skill in: Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs. Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience. Operating hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner. Operating motorized equipment used in forestry and landscaping. Providing high levels of effective customer service. Ability to: Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches. Handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Receive and follow written and verbal instructions. Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteer groups, and the general public. Maintain accurate records Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions. Work independently and as a member of a team. Focus on tasks. Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Ability to work on-call and respond at all hours of the day/night. Hours/Days Monday through Friday 7:30am-4:00pm. Forestry cares for the Parks and Recreation tree inventory, conducts volunteer and educational programs related to urban forestry, and helps maintain trails, parks, and open spaces within our park system. This position works an abundance of time outdoors and around heavy machinery, hand tools, and power tools. Skid loaders, aerial lifts, chainsaws, etc. are common tools utilized in this position. Maintenance Technician II's with Forestry are full-time Parks and Recreation employees with a Monday - Friday 7:30am-4:00pm schedule. Occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays may be required. CDL Class B with Airbrake endorsement required within 6 months of hire.
