In this crucial position, you'll ensure the timely and safe delivery of freight between our service centers and customer locations. The ideal candidate should possess a passion for safety, accuracy, and efficiency, along with a commitment to providing outstanding service. Our Pick up & Delivery Drivers have an average annual salary of $81,000. Additionally, this role is eligible for our Tuition Reimbursement Program for graduates of approved trucking schools. Job Summary Local P&D or City Drivers are responsible for operating various tractor-trailer combinations within the service center's geographic area, including sorting, handling, loading, and unloading freight. Primary Responsibilities Safely operate vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations regarding driving, hours of service, inspections, and hazardous materials transport. Meet medical standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation and pass drug and alcohol testing. Load and unload freight using equipment such as motorized forklifts and pallet jacks, adhering to DOT guidelines. Transport yourself and/or freight across the service center, navigating various surfaces. Utilize the Dock Yard Management System to track freight shipments. Read and interpret shipping labels and complete necessary shipping documentation. Hand load, rewrap, or stack freight when necessary. Ensure quality loading procedures for all trailers. Secure freight within trailers using appropriate tools. Maintain frequent communication with service center personnel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Be available to meet customer pick-up and delivery schedules. This list is not exhaustive; employees may be called upon to perform additional duties as required. Job Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience: Ability to read, write, speak English, and perform basic math calculations. Possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL-A) with endorsements for hazardous materials and twin/triple trailers. Maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record. 12 months of prior tractor-trailer driving experience or completion of a State Certified or Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program. Ability to operate handheld tablets when necessary. Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions through radio or phone. Familiarity with vehicle safety and control systems. Knowledge of DOT regulations for safe driving, hours of service, and transport of hazardous materials. Pass the medical standards of the U.S. DOT and clear drug and alcohol tests. Successful completion of orientation and training under Old Dominion’s qualified driver trainer. Must be at least 22 years old. Physical Demands The physical demands listed are representative of what must be accomplished to perform this job effectively. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities: Must remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours. Ability to stand and walk on various surfaces including sometimes slippery ones. Capability to bend, stoop, kneel, and squat regularly when handling and securing freight. Ability to enter and exit the vehicle cab multiple times daily. Frequent pushing and pulling of freight weighing up to 500 pounds; occasional lifting of items over 300 pounds using mechanical aids. Must lift and carry freight weighing 1 to 100 pounds regularly, and load/unload full trailers weighing up to 50,000 pounds. Must be able to reach for freight at various heights. Installation and removal of tire chains are required during inclement weather. Ability to utilize both hands for various tasks, including handling equipment and securing freight. Must demonstrate cognitive skills, including awareness of surroundings, memory for safety and inspections, and comprehension of documentation. Operational knowledge of manual transmission, vehicle controls, and automotive systems. Successful completion of physical testing that aligns with job requirements is required. Read, write, and speak English proficiently. Attendance is essential. Work Environment The work environment includes exposure to a variety of conditions, which may involve working alongside others during loading/unloading, driving in enclosed vehicles, and exposure to different weather and noise conditions.
