This position performs advanced, hands-on work in the maintenance, operation, and continuous improvement of City infrastructure, including parks, streets, water and sewer systems, stormwater facilities, and solid waste services. The role requires a high level of technical proficiency, sound judgment, and attention to detail to ensure critical public assets operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards. Employees in this role contribute daily to the reliability and resilience of essential services that support the health, safety, and quality of life of the community. Nature of Work: Under limited supervision, performs proficiently in the maintenance and construction work in the Street/Stormwater Division, the Water/Sewer Division, or the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department. Duties include construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets, alleys, water and sewer distribution systems, storm systems, and Solid Waste collections. Under supervision of the Foreman, acts as the lead in the Parks Division. A Maintenance Technician may be required to supervise other crew members and seasonal employees. At any given time, a Maintenance Technician may be assigned to work in a different division depending on the needs of the city. PLEASE NOTE: The City is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Maintenance Technician positions. Applicants are encouraged to apply for both Maintenance Technician I and Maintenance Technician - Senior to be considered at all qualification levels. There are two vacancies total, and selections may be made from either the Maintenance Technician I or Maintenance Technician - Senior eligibility lists, depending on qualifications and organizational needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Job Duties: The following duties are not inclusive of all duties and the incumbents perform other related duties as required. Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite to support departmental operations. Operating employer vehicles and traveling between job sites. Perform assigned duties in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety policies, procedures, and training; use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices when working around traffic, equipment, tools, and the public. Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, and near misses to a supervisor as required. Participate in required safety training and meetings. Comply with Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and OSHA standards applicable to assigned work, including participation in safety meetings, training, and inspections. All employees may be required to perform emergency response duties in the event of a local emergency or disaster and are required to participate as part of the City's emergency operations. Perform other duties as assigned. When Assigned to the Street/Stormwater Division: Assists in the construction and maintenance of streets, alleys, rights-of-way, culverts, and storm drainage facilities. Paints street lines and curbs. Excavates, builds forms, pours concrete, and assists with carpentry work. Responsible for the implementation of NPDES requirements including maintenance on stormwater treatment facilities, catch basin maintenance, storm pond maintenance. Performs traffic control/ flagging. When Assigned to the Water/Sewer Division: Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, valves, hydrants, water services, meters, pumps, reservoirs, blow-offs, and collector well. Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer mains and sewer lift stations. When Assigned to the Solid Waste Division: Assists in solid waste collection and disposal operations. Acts as equipment operator. Coordinates collection crews. Ensure equipment/machinery is property maintained. Performs maintenance on solid waste receptacles. Responsible for the day-to-day operation and upkeep of the Decant Facility. Evaluatesefficiencyofcollectionroutesandensuresaccuracyofcollection charges for commercial accounts relative to solid waste collections. Handles customer inquiries and complaints concerning collection activity. When Assigned to the Parks Division: Leads a crew engaged in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City parks, playfields, and recreation areas in other related facilities. Performs skilled carpentry, plumbing, and concrete work. Operates a variety of equipment such as push mower, riding mower, weed whip, edger, blower and other equipment used in park maintenance, as well as hand and power tools. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of methods and practices of construction and maintenance of streets, alleys, storm drainage, sewer systems, water mains. Knowledge of equipment used in streets, water/sewer/storm, and/or solid waste systems. Practices and methods of refuse collection. Materials, supplies, equipment, maintenance methods, and practices relative to parks and landscape maintenance programs. Safety requirements and proper application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers used in parks and landscape maintenance. Irrigation system installation, repair, and maintenance. Safe operation of various light equipment and power tools. Skill in the efficient and safe operation of various hand and power tools used in construction maintenance in the Water/Sewer/Division, Street/Stormwater Division, Parks Division and/or Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department. Ability to safely and efficiently operate all equipment authorized and available to accomplish the work. Ability to construct and maintain streets, sewers, water and storm systems, and other related projects. Ability to communicate, read, and write at a level necessary for efficient job performance. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to obtain a Flaggers Card at the City Expense. Working Conditions: This position involves regular outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Employees may be exposed to dirt, dust, noise, traffic, and odors while performing duties. The work is physically demanding and may require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy materials, standing or walking for extended periods, bending, stooping, kneeling, and using hand and power tools. This is a safety sensitive position. Work may take place around moving equipment, vehicles, open trenches, and utility lines, requiring attention to safety procedures at all times. Employees may be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, or during emergency situations such as severe weather or utility outages. Proper safety equipment and training are provided. This position may involve working alone in parks where children and vulnerable adults are present. Lifting Requirements: This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 75 pounds occasionally with assistance or proper equipment. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Possession of a valid Class A CDL with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement at the time of appointment. Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment, the ability to obtain a Washington State driver's license within three (3) months of appointment, and a driving record free of significant moving violations. The ability to obtain a flagging certificate within a reasonable time period prescribed by the employer. Willingness to learn how to safely perform the work and maintain safety standards. Preferred Qualifications: One year of experience performing duties similar to a Maintenance Technician - Senior. Licenses and Other Requirements: Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record to meet City insurance requirements for operating City vehicles. A background check is required and will be conducted only after a conditional offer of employment has been made. Previous criminal history is not an automatic disqualifier; all findings will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with applicable laws and City policy. A drug screening in accordance with applicable law and City policy will be conducted only after a conditional offer of employment has been made. The City contributes 95% of the cost of medical/vision premiums and 100% of dental premiums. In 2025, the employee's cost is $84.73 per month for full family coverage. There is a $30,000 life insurance policy paid for by the City. Employees receive 11 paid holidays, 8 hours of sick leave accrual per month, and 8 hours of vacation accruals per month with future increases to the vacation accruals per the collective bargaining agreement. After six months of employment, employees receive two floating holidays; and after one year, two personal leave days are provided. Employees receive an additional 2% longevity pay after five years which increases every five years thereafter with a 6% maximum.
