Your primary duties involve monitoring the swim beach, responding to emergencies, and maintaining safety in an outdoor environment. It is preferred that candidates are lifeguard certified (Red Cross or StarGuard) and hold current First Aid and CPR credentials. Successful applicants must be capable of heavy physical work, including lifting and swimming in cold water. The target hire date is May 1, 2026, with training starting in mid-May and the season ending on Labor Day (September 7, 2026). The hiring rate for this role is $18.50/hour. This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis; as soon as we determine we have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. The selected applicant(s) will undergo the following conditions: Background Check (if over 18) Drug Screening Position Overview: The Aurora Reservoir is looking for the best Lifeguards in Colorado to fill our chairs on our Swim Beach. We're hiring friendly, customer service-oriented people to protect our visitors. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Provides excellent customer service and performs a variety of tasks related to aquatic safety. Maintains safety and cleanliness of beach front area including providing patron information, responding to beach emergencies, performing daily beach maintenance, gaining voluntary compliance with beach regulations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: None Experience: None Required Qualifications: Lifeguard Certification through Red Cross or another credible agency Preferred Qualifications: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) preferred Knowledge: Knowledge of Beachfront safety and emergency action plans Skills: Skilled in lifesaving techniques and emergency response Excellent customer service skills Abilities: Ability to maintain a safe environment at an outdoor work site Licenses and Certifications Required: Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR Certification WORKING CONDITIONS Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work lifting a maximum of 100 pounds with assistance Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance Regular walking and standing; regular climbing; bending; kneeling and crouching Hand/foot/eye coordination to perform appropriate rescue skills Vision to read instructions Hearing and speech abilities for communication with employees and citizens. Work Environment: Works outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to sun, dust, and noise; swimming in cold water and other conditions found at an outdoor swim beach. Equipment Used: Operates equipment related to an aquatic facility. The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
