The Opportunity: We are currently seeking a Highway Engineer III to join our Baltimore Transportation team. This role is designed for an experienced transportation engineer who is ready to take a leading role in the design and technical delivery of roadway projects throughout Maryland. As a Highway Engineer III, you will contribute to complex transportation projects, lead key design tasks, and collaborate closely with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality solutions for MDOT and local agency clients. This position offers increasing responsibility in technical oversight, coordination, and client interaction while continuing to grow toward higher-level leadership roles. What You'll Do: The Highway Engineer will support the design and development of roadway and highway infrastructure projects for various offices/DOTs. This role includes hands-on design, geometric layout, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality transportation engineering solutions for public-sector clients at the local, state, and federal levels. Key Responsibilities: Assist in the preparation of roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and details. Assist with Access Management reviews that focus on review of traffic analysis, traffic reports, and safety analysis. Assist with traffic design, analysis and lighting design. Contribute to horizontal and vertical geometric design of roadways and intersections. Develop design to comply with ADA requirements. Develop roadway models using Openroads and InRoads Support the development of construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates. Coordinate with drainage, structural, utility, and traffic teams to integrate design elements. Prepare technical reports, design memoranda, and supporting documentation. Ensure compliance with applicable design standards and agency requirements (e.g., AASHTO, state DOT). Participate in internal reviews and quality control efforts. What You'll Bring: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in highway or roadway design. Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is required. Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred. Proficiency with roadway design software (e.g., MicroStation, OpenRoads, InRoads). Familiarity with AASHTO, MUTCD guidelines and state DOT design standards. Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
