Chicago State University is Illinois' only four-year U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution (PBI). We seek a mathematician who will be not only an excellent teacher and a credible researcher, but also an institution builder-someone who sees this as a great opportunity to drive the growth and future of the mathematics major at CSU. CSU, one of the state's oldest educational institutions which is on Chicago's south side, has launched a re-envisioned undergraduate mathematics curriculum that blends abstraction with computing and highlights design thinking as a means of empowering students to create innovative, community-centered solutions. Our new M.S. in Mathematics & Computational Intelligence is the only program in Illinois offering a degree option primarily by research, expanding opportunities for advanced study; it is especially suitable for highly skilled individuals in industry or government who are contemplating data-driven career changes, as well as for those seeking a second master's degree. Responsibilities Faculty members are expected to contribute to teaching, research, and service, as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement. Teaching: Teach up to 24 credit-unit equivalents per year; develop syllabi, instructional materials, and innovative course content; advise students; supervise graduate theses and research projects; engage in professional development and participate in assessment activities tied to accreditation and program evaluation.Three credit hours of release time for research is built into the above 24 credit hour load. Research: Establish a credible research program in the mathematical sciences with promise for funding and publications. Service: Participate actively in departmental, college, university, and professional and community committees and initiatives. Assume a graduate leadership roles in contributing to the mathematics program's growth, sustaining the major, and helping to shape CSU's role in preparing the next generation of mathematicians and data scientists. Appointment Details Rank: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) Term: Full-time, 9-month appointment Start Date: 16 August 2026 All faculty positions are governed by the university's collective bargaining agreement, which ensures clear guidelines for hiring, evaluation, promotion, tenure, and professional responsibilities. The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching and related academic activities throughout the academic year. Faculty are also expected to uphold the University's commitment to academic excellence by fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment that supports, values, and challenges students from diverse ethnic, religious, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Required Education Earned Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and advising at the undergraduate and graduate level. Evidence of or potential for scholarly research and publications in mathematical sciences, including statistics, or a closely related field. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills Commitment to supporting diverse student populations and fostering an inclusive learning environment. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability and commitment to advance departmental, college, and university initiatives by engaging students through high-quality teaching, maintaining an active research program in the mathematical sciences, and contributing professional service that strengthens the institution. Must be conversant in student-centered pedagogy that supports the success of a diverse student body. Ability to teach courses in computing such as machine learning or in quantum information science will be considered a plus. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching a broad range of undergraduate mathematics courses (e.g., Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Statistics, etc.). Evidence of successful teaching experience in higher education. Demonstrated ability or interest in mentoring students in research or academic success. Record of or potential for grant writing and external funding. Ability to contribute to departmental service, curriculum development, and program assessment. Ability to advocate for the Department effectively in university committees and other institutional fora. Experience working at a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), HBCU, or other minority-serving institution is desirable. Prior experience delivering undergraduate or graduate courses online or in hybrid formats Familiarity with a learning management system (LMS) such as Brightspace. Special Requirements Doctoral and master's transcripts are required.
