The successful candidate will play a critical role as a key member of the Executive Team, delivering strategic legal guidance to leadership and program teams. This position is fundamental in managing enterprise risk, responding to crises, and making cross-functional decisions. The Chief Legal Officer will also act as Secretary to the Boards. The ideal candidate should possess over 10 years of legal experience, particularly with philanthropic organizations, and demonstrate a strong understanding of tax-exempt entities, notably in 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures. Previous experience with government inquiries, congressional investigations, and litigation preparedness is required. A background in private foundations, government service, or large mission-driven nonprofits is a plus. The Chief Legal Officer will utilize seasoned in-house judgment and a practical risk tolerance to support the Foundation's mission of fostering an inclusive, multiracial democracy. We are looking for a professional who can skillfully navigate the complex external landscape with a confident, compliant approach and adeptly manage legal issues in a manner that aligns with the organization's values and objectives.
