Job Description Job Title: Power BI Lead Engagement Type: 90 Day Contract Location: Denver, Colorado (I-25 and Colorado Blvd.) Work Model: Onsite Pay Rate: $55 to $65 per hour (depending on experience) Overview A seasoned Power BI Lead is needed for a focused 90 day engagement. This person will assess the current BI environment, drive a structured cleanup effort, and lead a small team to improve reporting quality, governance, and reliability. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with strong BI project management experience and the ability to self-start and execute with minimal oversight. Core Mission for the First 90 Days Lead and deliver a targeted cleanup and standardization of the existing Power BI ecosystem including reports, datasets, dataflows, refresh processes, and governance. This role will also coordinate and guide team members to execute a prioritized improvement backlog and establish a sustainable BI operating model moving forward. Why This Role Exists The current Power BI environment requires rationalization and structure. Reports and datasets may be duplicated, performance issues are likely, ownership may be unclear, and multiple versions of truth may exist. The team needs a Power BI expert who can map the current state, build a practical plan, and manage contributors to deliver measurable improvements quickly. Scope of Work Discovery and Assessment Inventory all Power BI assets including reports, datasets, dataflows, gateways, RLS rules, workspaces, and refresh schedulesIdentify owners and current usage patternsSurface key issues such as performance bottlenecks, broken refreshes, redundant datasets, security gaps, and ungoverned workspaces Prioritization and Planning Build a short, ranked improvement backlog based on usage and executive visibilityCreate a 90 day delivery plan with weekly sprints and a clear Now, Next, Later roadmap Cleanup and Standardization Consolidate and standardize semantic models and shared datasetsImplement consistent naming conventions, folder structures, and documentation standardsApply standardized DAX formatting and centralized shared measuresIntroduce standardized report themes and UX elementsFix dataset and dataflow refreshes and improve performance where needed Governance and Operating Model Define workspace strategy including Dev, Test, and ProdEstablish roles, permissions, and consistent RLS or OLS approachesSet up change control processes, deployment pipelines, and PBIX source controlClarify ownership of datasets, reports, and refresh responsibilities Team Leadership and Enablement Run standups, manage sprint execution, and unblock team membersCoach analysts on modeling, DAX, and performance tuning best practicesProduce runbooks, playbooks, and complete handover documentation Key Outcomes and Success MetricsPriority reports load in under 5 to 10 secondsScheduled refresh success rate at 99 percent or higher for Tier 1 contentOne certified dataset per major subject area with reduced redundancyFully documented Dev, Test, Prod workspaces with clear RBAC and RLSStandardized report navigation, themes, and guidance notesIncrease in adoption and satisfaction for certified reportsComplete handover documentation and clearly assigned ongoing ownership Required Skills and Experience Power BI Technical Leadership Expertise in data modeling, star schema design, DAX, Power Query, and Performance AnalyzerExperience building and managing semantic models and shared datasetsStrong knowledge of RLS or OLS, workspace setups, certification, and governanceAbility to troubleshoot refresh failures, gateway issues, and incremental refresh Project and People Leadership Ability to run a structured 90 day plan with sprints and standupsExperience coordinating analysts, engineers, and SMEsStrong communication skills with executives and business stakeholders Self Starter Mindset Able to independently assess an environment and build a plan from scratchSkilled at stakeholder discovery and determining prioritiesComfortable driving clarity even with ambiguous requirements Additional Notes This role is designed for someone who can lead by example, collaborate across teams, and deliver meaningful improvements within a compressed timeframe.
