Position Type: Non Instructional - All Titles/Supervising Mason Date Posted: 2/10/2026 Location: Project Control - 355 NEWARK BOARD OF EDUCATION HUMAN RESOURCE SERVICES 765 BROAD STREET, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 07102 ROGER LE N, SUPERINTENDENTSUPERVISING MASON Office of Facilities Management/Project Control(Pending availability of funds and Superintendents approval) The State District Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervising Mason with the Office of Facilities Management/Project Control. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee. DEFINITION: Under direction, supervises and works with personnel performing general masonry work required for repair, maintenance, and construction of various facilities; ensures use of approved masonry practices and conformity with applicable plans, specifications and codes; does other related duties as required. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate. 2. Five (5) years of experience in masonry work involving a variety of tasks in concrete work, erection of masonry structures and plastering. 3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Inspects, analyzes, and assists in determination of masonry work to be done. 2. Assigns work plans, written and/or oral, gives assignments and instructions to subordinates and supervises their work performance. 3. Examines work in progress to ensure the use of approved trade practices. 4. Checks conformity of work with applicable plans, specifications and codes. 5. Supervises and performs general masonry work required in the repair, maintenance and construction of various structures/appurtenances. 6. Supervises and performs tasks involved in plastering exteriors and interiors. 7. Prepares reports. 8. Maintains records and files. 9. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES 1. Knowledge of problems involved in masonry. 2. Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices occupational hazards, and safety precautions. 3. Knowledge of methods used in keeping records. 4. Ability to analyze problems related to the work. 5. Ability to take needed safety precautions and see that work areas are kept in an orderly, safe condition. 6. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, record, and supervise use for equipment, materials, and supplies. 7. Ability to organize assigned work, develop effective work methods, and to give assignments and instructions. 8. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. 9. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. 10.
