Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Loy Norrix High School 10 Month Full Time 2026-2027 School Year Scope of Responsibilities The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director will provide leadership for the overall high school athletic program. The tasks of the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director will be to assist the principal in all aspects of the high school and has particular management duties for the overall implementation of the athletic programs at the high school and two designated middle schools, including scheduling, procuring and expending funds; contest management; hiring, supervising and evaluating personnel, and management of athletic facilities. The position of Assistant Principal/Athletic Director will also have K-12 coordinating responsibilities in the district's physical education and athletic programs. Performance Responsibilities Assists the principal with the overall leadership of the high school, which will include, but not be limited to, observations and evaluations of staff, supervision, and management of students. Supervises professional development during building professional development and department head professional development meetings. Supervises the work of professional and classified employees as assigned. Assures the safety and welfare of students and staff. Assists with planning and implementation of programs for parent groups, staff, and community agencies, and promotes positive public and school-community relations. Assists the principal in promoting academic achievement throughout the school. Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation in collaboration with designated middle school athletic directors and principals. Develops, monitors, implements, and analyzes all aspects of athletic budget. Administers and manages the operation of the high school athletic program in compliance with the Board of Education policy and the direction of the Superintendent. Organizes, directs, and promotes an interscholastic athletic program that is in harmony with, and contributes to, the total school program, and will meet the goals of the district and the rules and regulations of the M.H.S.A.A. Provides leadership for the planning and management of the total high school athletic program and supervises and evaluates all staff members assigned to the program. Assists the principal in recruiting, screening and recommending qualified candidates for athletic personnel in the high school and middle school athletic programs. This includes coaches, game help, athletic aides, officials, etc. Supervises athletic trainer. Supervises the maintenance of files and records on athlete physicals, athlete insurance program, release, and participation. Mentor to middle school athletic directors as needed. Coordinates the use of all school athletic facilities by groups outside the school with the respective building principal, using District scheduling software. Assumes responsibility for the safety, administration, and maintenance of athletic facilities and equipment. Prepares and submits requests for purchases and repairs, and monitors expenditures and funds of the athletic and physical education programs. Arranges, facilitates and schedules programs in all indoor and outdoor facilities and coordinates the use of non-school facilities when necessary. Coordinates attendance of all athletic events by the Athletic Director or one of two Athletic Aides. Conducts seasonal coaches and parent meetings over rules, regulations, and expectations that include but are not limited to the Student Code of Conduct, M.H.S.A.A., study table, eligibility, and code violations. Maintains records of all athletic suspensions and expulsions from teams. Ensures student athletes receive their "due process". Acts as tournament manager for all league and tournament playoff activities that are assigned to the building. Supports all sports teams through visibility and communication. Acts as a liaison between coaches and the athletic boosters club. Attends meetings with Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference (SMAC) and Greater Kalamazoo athletic directors, as well as state and regional meetings. Supervises homecoming and winterfest week activities. Provides leadership for community and parent groups on matters pertaining to the vision of the physical education and athletic programs. All other duties of secondary assistant principals as needed or assigned. Minimum Qualifications At least three years of teaching experience at the secondary level. Knowledge of or experience with high school curriculum, data analysis, performance assessment, and school improvement planning. Experience in advancing student achievement. Master's Degree in teaching, athletics management, or educational leadership. Knowledge or background in record keeping and budgeting. Successful work history. Meet or be willing to meet the State school administrator's certification. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of Google Suite for communication and report writing. Knowledge of MHSAA rules and guidelines. Desirable Qualifications Three (3) to five (5) years of successful management of a high school athletic program. At least six (6) years of successful teaching experience at the secondary level. Successful leadership experience in a multicultural/multi-racial school district.
