Salary: $16.90 - $17.40 Hourly Location : Bakersfield, CA Job Type: Seasonal Part Time Job Number: 202600003 Department: Recreation Division: Aquatics Opening Date: 02/09/2026 Closing Date: Continuous Description Lifeguards and Instructors are responsible for the supervision and enforcement of all pool safety rules and regulations of pool patrons and all pool deck activities; recognize and respond effectively to emergencies; administer CPR, rescue breathing and first aid when needed; attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings; perform basic facility maintenance duties; work in a strong teamwork oriented environment; have a positive working relationship with coworkers; and work flexible hours during the season. HOURS: up to 40 hours/week; Sunday through Saturday, between 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. POOL LOCATION: Greenacres Park (GA Pool), 2014 Calloway Drive, 93312 Examples of Duties DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are considered normal essential duties for Lifeguard and Instructor positions. These include, but are not limited to: Lifeguarding duties: will maintain constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and accountable for all program participants during program hours; will considerately and patiently enforce facility rules to provide a safe environment in and around the pool, deck, locker rooms and turf areas: and perform set-up and break-down of facility equipment as needed. Prevents accidents, rescues swimmers in emergencies and administers CPR, rescue breathing and other first aid (as needed) by following accepted lifesaving, health and District practices and standards. Completes accurate documentation of accidents and incidents in pool and pool area and other appropriate reports and forms as necessary. Cleans and maintains the pool area including the deck area, pump, dressing rooms, rest rooms, lobby, and other areas as assigned. Maintains pool chemicals and sanitation records and requirements. Completes reports and minor financial and clerical tasks to include collecting fees. Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with department safety standards. Reports any unsafe condition or equipment in need of repair to their supervisor. Provides professional service to participants, facility users, NOR staff and the public by assuming a professional attitude and appearance at all times while on duty. Maintains positive behavior of participants and acts as a positive role model/mentor to youth. Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance. Attends and participates at staff meetings and training sessions required during aquatics season. Performs various related duties as assigned. Additional duties for Instructors: Develops weekly lesson plans for assigned levels of instruction, conducts swim lessons according to plans by demonstrating and teaching beginning through advanced swim strokes. Evaluates swim lesson participants. Keeps daily class attendance records. Responsible for completion of participant swim records as required by Red Cross. Typical Qualifications Lifeguard minimum qualifications specifically required for each level: Lifeguard I - Must be at least 15 ½ years old. Lifeguard II -Requires one year of experience as a lifeguard in a public swimming facility. Lifeguard III - Two years of experience as Lifeguard in a public swimming facility. Aquatic Instructor minimum qualifications specifically required for each level: Aquatic Instructor I - Must be at least 16 years old Aquatic Instructor II - Requires one year of experience as an Aquatic Instructor in a public swimming facility. Aquatic Instructor III - Requires two years of experience as an Aquatic Instructor in a public swimming facility. Aquatic Instructor minimum qualifications for all levels: Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. Typical ways to obtain the required skills, knowledge and abilities: Experience: None required; however, preference will be given to applicants possessing previous working experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, swim coach, or other related field; or previous aquatic experience on a swim team, or participation in a Jr. Lifeguard Program or other related aquatic activities. Certification: All Lifeguard and Aquatic Instructor positions require certifications through the American Red Cross and must be obtained prior to working and retained and current throughout employment. Water Safety Instruction (Aquatic Instructors only) American Red Cross Lifeguard Training CPR for the Professional Trainer Community First Aide Title 22 Bloodborne Pathogens Oxygen Administration AED Administration Knowledge of: Rules and regulations pertaining to swimming pool safety; lifesaving techniques, first aid, water safety and maintenance and use of lifesaving equipment; current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in implementing and performing a variety of aquatic activities including, assisting or teaching swim lessons, working with children and adults of various ages and abilities in an aquatics setting and lifeguarding; basic principles of customer service; basic operation of pool equipment and office machines including calculator and copy machine. Ability to: Instructors must be able to teach swimming to participants. All positions must be able to supervise pool patron activities and events; observe and evaluate emergency situations and act quickly in the same situations; swim and perform swimming rescues in emergencies, perform first aid, including CPR and rescue breathing; analyze and use independent judgment in solving fairly routine situations such as responding to customer or complaints; and resolve conflicts between participants to ensure safety. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions; comprehend, utilize, and interpret a variety of reference books and manuals; comprehend and prepare reports and forms; effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, coworkers, district staff, management, and the public; and handle cash and make change. Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule which may include shifts, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays; and must be able to relate to other people beyond giving and receiving instructions; getting along with co-workers or peers without exhibiting behavioral extremes; performing work activities requiring negotiating, instructing, supervising, persuading or speaking with others; and responding appropriately to correction and feedback from a supervisor. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: All work activities are performed in a public swimming facility. Frequently exerts a moderate to considerable amount of physical effort in outdoor and indoor activities involving swimming, sitting, standing, and walking. Demonstrates beginning through advanced swim strokes. Must have the ability to see and hear with sufficient acuity (sharpness, clearness, and keenness) to successfully perform all aspects of the job. Performs frequent grasping, fine and gross manipulation in writing, use of a telephone, keyboard, and hand tools; and coordinates eyes, hands and fingers in repetitive tasks such as performing CPR and first aid, games and crafts. Frequently bending, stooping, and exerting sufficient force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects such as an injured person on a backboard weighing up to fifty (50) pounds or more. Communicates regularly with participants, co-workers, and the public.
