Position Type: Operations/HVAC Mechanic/Technician Date Posted: 3/5/2026 Location: Dept of Facilities & Operation Closing Date: 10/27/2025 The DeKalb County School District is seeking an experienced and professional HVAC Mechanic/Technician. Reports to: Supervisor III, Skill Trade Structure/Grade: Unified 117 Division: Operations Workdays: 246 Days Position Summary Perform basic skilled tasks to maintain and repair HVAC systems, perform preventive maintenance, and promptly address issues to ensure optimal operation and comfort. Perform duties under moderate supervision as an intermediate-level individual contributor. Essential Job Duties Complete routine and sometimes more robust tasks as assigned in a timely manner. Troubleshoot and repair air conditioning systems, building distribution systems, water heaters, and ensure proper functioning of pumps, boilers, cooling towers, rooftop units, and heat pumps. Perform regular maintenance and seasonal servicing of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to maintain system efficiency. Inspect heating and air equipment regularly; replace air filters, grease motors, and belts; report malfunctions to ensure timely repairs. Collaborate with team members to provide a comfortable environment for occupants by responding promptly to emergency maintenance requests for safety and comfort. Maintain roofing materials as needed. Service water softeners to ensure longevity of equipment. Keep accurate records of maintenance work performed on all serviced systems for accountability and tracking purposes. Assist HVAC Technicians as needed with more complex tasks or during peak operational times. Maintain inventory control over supplies and equipment necessary for building maintenance operations, ensuring availability when required. Follow established standard operating procedures and systems to accomplish tasks. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma with some additional continuing education through a certification program with a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience level is required. An Associate's degree in a related field from a Professional Standards Commission-approved accredited college or university is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Competence in tasks required to install and maintain HVAC equipment Knowledge of HVAC technology and equipment Knowledge of HVAC repair and maintenance Ability to review and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings Knowledge of HVAC installation, performance testing, and troubleshooting processes and procedures Understanding of relevant occupational hazards and safety precautions Ability to solve problems within defined parameters and under clearly established processes Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to follow clearly established procedures Ability to work collaboratively and seek assistance when needed Physical Demands and Work Environment Constantly operates and inspects mechanical equipment. Constantly positions self to use, inspect, clean, or repair tools and machinery. Constantly observes details at close range. Frequently required to exchange accurate information. Frequently remains in a stationary position. Frequently moves tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across the facility. Frequently operates a motor vehicle safely and legally, in accordance with applicable state and federal transportation laws. Occasionally moves tools and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds across the manufacturing floor. Occasionally ascends/descends machinery and equipment to repair/service. Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Constantly exposed to loud noise levels. Constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to mechanical oils, vibration, and risk of electrical shock.
