General Description The President is the senior executive leader responsible for translating Blue Star Families' mission, vision, and strategic priorities into operational excellence, measurable impact, and scalable infrastructure. Reporting to the CEO, the President drives enterprise-wide alignment, performance, organizational culture, and sustainable growth. A primary mandate of this role is to scale the organization - strengthening systems, structure, talent, and operational maturity to support continued expansion of impact, revenue, programs, and geographic reach. The President ensures the organization evolves from its current state to a future-ready enterprise capable of sustaining long-term growth. Positioned between the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team, the President serves as the organization's chief integrator-ensuring strategy is executed effectively across programs, operations, finance, marketing, and community engagement. The President exercises broad delegated authority over enterprise-wide operations, internal resource allocation, executive leadership, and infrastructure development within parameters established by the CEO and the Board of Directors. All C-suite officers report directly to the President, including the Chief Impact Officer, Chief Communities Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. In this capacity, the President builds executive leadership capacity and ensures enterprise-wide cohesion, accountability, and scalability. In addition to operational leadership, the President serves as steward of company culture. This leader sets the tone for a high-performance, mission-aligned environment grounded in accountability, collaboration, transparency, inclusion, and continuous improvement. The President must be a strong people leader who develops senior executives, strengthens cross-functional trust, and builds leadership depth across the organization. The President will focus approximately 90% internally and 10% externally, representing the organization. This role requires a strategic, mission-driven executive with deep experience leading growth and scaling complex organizations. The President must reside in the National Capital Region and be able to travel overnight several times per year for leadership retreats, staff off-sites, and organization-wide gatherings. Participation in these gatherings is an essential function of the role. Key Job Functions Executive Leadership and Organizational Management Provide executive oversight of day-to-day organizational operations. Directly manage and develop all C-suite leaders (Chief Impact Officer, Chief Communities Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Chief Financial Officer). Build, align, and hold accountable a high-performing Executive Leadership Team. Establish clear operational priorities, decision-making frameworks, and performance expectations. Serve as chief integrator, resolving cross-functional challenges and eliminating silos. Lead intentional culture-building efforts to sustain engagement, retention, and performance. Build leadership bench strength and succession readiness across the enterprise. Perform other duties as assigned. Organizational Scaling and Strategic Growth (Core Responsibility) Lead and execute a multi-year scaling strategy aligned with organizational growth goals. Design and strengthen operational infrastructure, systems, policies, and governance structures to support growth. Ensure organizational structure evolves to meet expanding programmatic and geographic reach. Modernize enterprise systems, data infrastructure, and internal processes to increase efficiency and impact. Drive disciplined growth while preserving mission integrity, culture, and financial sustainability. Oversee change management initiatives required to transition the organization from the current state to the future-state scale. Strategic Execution Partner with the CEO and Board to develop and operationalize the strategic plan. Translate vision into measurable goals, KPIs, and execution plans. Monitor enterprise performance and adjust strategy as needed. Align resources, talent, and infrastructure with strategic priorities. Program and Impact Oversight Ensure consistent, high-quality program delivery across all lines of business. Oversee program scalability, effectiveness, compliance, and impact measurement. Align program design with strategic priorities and available resources. Financial Stewardship and Infrastructure Partner closely with the Chief Financial Officer on financial planning, budgeting, and long-term sustainability. Ensure strong internal controls and operational discipline. Align financial strategy with scaling and growth objectives. Oversee enterprise systems to ensure integrity, security, and efficiency. Team Leadership and Culture Development Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to senior executives. Foster a culture of high performance, transparency, and continuous improvement. Lead talent development strategies that support growth and succession planning. Model values-driven leadership consistent with the organization's mission. Required Experience, Skills & Background Demonstrated experience scaling an organization is a required and non-negotiable qualification for this role. Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred. Minimum of 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior executive role within a complex organization. Proven track record of successfully scaling a complex organization (nonprofit, private sector, government, or military), demonstrated through executive leadership and/or consulting or advisory roles supporting organizational growth, including expanding infrastructure, growing revenue and/or program reach, building executive teams, and managing through periods of significant growth and transformation. Demonstrated experience leading or advising organizations with budgets of $30+ million. Significant experience directly managing and/or developing C-suite or senior executive leaders. Strong financial acumen with experience overseeing large organizational budgets and resource allocation. Proven ability to translate strategy into execution and measurable operational outcomes. Exceptional people leadership skills and experience in building high-performing, accountable teams. Strong strategic and operational leadership capabilities, balancing long-term vision with disciplined execution. Experience leading enterprise-wide change management initiatives. Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and executive presence. Deep alignment with and commitment to the organization's mission and values. Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, or holidays as required. Ability to travel overnight several times per year. Desired Experience, Skills & Background Experience scaling a national nonprofit organization. Familiarity with social impact measurement and evaluation frameworks. Experience across multiple sectors (nonprofit, private sector, government, or military). Comfort with public speaking and media interaction. Demonstrated ability to foster inclusive, mission-driven teams.
