Salary: $39,932.46 - $49,915.58 Annually Location : Graham, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 1101a Department: Streets & Hwys Division: General Opening Date: 03/05/2026 Closing Date: 3/20/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Summary and General Statement of Duties The City is seeking a motivated and dependable General Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works team. This position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks supporting the maintenance of streets, stormwater infrastructure, public grounds, and city facilities. General Statement of Duties Under immediate supervision, performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks with various tools and equipment in Street Department and various Departments in the City. Distinguishing Features of the Class and Illustrative Examples of Work An employee in this class works as a member of a maintenance crew led by a supervisor or crew leader. This employee uses hand tools and power tools, light to medium equipment and manual labor to perform tasks, which include grounds keeping and street maintenance work. The employee is required to have or obtain class B CDL and operate dump trucks. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the street supervisor or supervisor in the division assigned. Work is reviewed for the ability to follow directions, complete assigned tasks in a safe and timely manner, and clean-up of work area and quality of work.Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Illustrative Examples of Work Performs grounds-keeping activities by removing debris, digging, grading, backfilling, seeding, mulching, cutting and removing trees, planting, transplanting, and watering. Operates various types of hand and power tools, such as mowers, weed-eaters, saws, rakes, shovels, tamps, and other tools and equipment associated with work assigned. Operates dump trucks and truck mounted snow plows. Assists in setting up traffic control and flagging traffic. Assists in maintenance and repairs of streets, Storm water infrastructure, sidewalks, driveways, gutters and other City facilities and infrastructure. Assists in concrete work by forming and pouring. Assists in making street name, warning and regulatory signs. Works in aerial lifts trimming trees and installing and removing lights. Works with crew to install and repair street signs. Loads, transports, and unloads daily materials, supplies, and equipment. Perform heavy manual labor, often in unfavorable weather conditions. Assists leaf collection crew with leaf pick-up. Assist in maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Performs duties of Sanitation Collector and cleans work areas and job sites as assigned. Other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Knowledge of and dedication to general safety procedures; commitment to using PPE. Ability to read tape measure/grade rod, and do basic math. Ability to use tablets and work order program. Ability to obtain flagger training and aerial lift certifications. Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work assigned. Ability to operate tools and equipment used in the work assigned. Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work in this position is heavy work (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, to extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, oils, close quarters and other areas which could cause claustrophobia, and exposure to potentially infectious bodily fluids. Position Qualifications The position requires a valid North Carolina CDL Class B Driver License, or the ability to obtain one when training is available. Completion of high school or equivalent.
