The assistant is also responsible for applying appropriate dressing materials specific to the procedure. Collaboration with the operating room team is crucial for effective patient care. Demonstrating knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedures is required. Assuring all necessary supplies, equipment, and instruments are available is essential. Confirmation with the nurse and surgical technologist helps ensure items are charged appropriately. The assistant must assist the physician with positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, cautery techniques, stapling devices, and suturing.
