Job Description: OVERVIEW: Artward Bound is a free 4-year program that prepares 9th - 12th-grade students interested in visual arts and design with the artistic and academic skills needed for admission to and success at an art/design college or other post-secondary institution. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Artward Bound Instructors are central to the Artward Bound teaching team and teach visual arts courses for Artward Bound students in grades 9-12. In consultation with Artward Bound staff, Instructors are responsible for developing curriculum, preparing and submitting lesson plans, leading facilitation, and assessing student growth and development. Artward Bound classes are designed for students to develop and hone foundational art making skills, understand elements and principles of design, explore 2D and/or 3D techniques and practices, and enhance their connection to contemporary art. Instructors will be supported by at least one Mentor (a MassArt student worker) and Instructors are expected to work with their Mentor(s) prior to each day's instruction to plan for the day and meet student needs. COMPENSATION: Starting rate $40/hr Hours 6 per week Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS: Strong candidates will have: A bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in education or the arts Advanced technical art and design skills (observational drawing, painting, form study and critique), with demonstrated experience in their proposed course of study Experience teaching art and working with youth in classroom/community/museum settings Understanding of positive and creative youth development approaches to supporting urban youth Experience supporting underrepresented youth in academics and personal growth Experience creating dynamic and student-centered lesson plans Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with Artward Bound staff and mentors Additional language proficiency other than English (especially Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and/or Mandarin Chinese), a plus SPRING 2024 TERM/SCHEDULE & REQUIRED DATES: Spring Orientation: Wednesday January 31 Spring Term: Friday February 2 - Friday May 10 Open Studio Days: Wednesday May 15 and Friday May 17 Install: Monday May 20 - 22 Spring Celebration: Thursday May 23 Spring Critiques: Wednesday May 29 and Friday May 31 Class Schedule: Wednesdays and Fridays, 3pm - 6:30pm; Teaching time is 4:00-6:00 All classes are in-person and take place on MassArt's campus Staff meeting and planning: Teaching Team meetings take place on the 1st Wednesday of the month from 6:30-7:30/8pm Additional Information: Please note MassArt: Does not support employment-based visa sponsorship or non-student exchange visitor visa sponsorship.
