The Institutional Product Group is crucial in Coinbase's institutional operations, providing secure digital asset custody for numerous significant financial institutions. The Coinbase Custody team is known as the most reliable and secure institutional digital asset storage solution in the world. Our goal is to build and expand the leading crypto platform for trading, custody, and financing. We are currently searching for an Engineering Leader to help foster trust and scale across our platform. Your responsibilities will include: Build and Enhance Trust: Transform Coinbase Custody into the most trusted and secure institutional digital asset platform. Drive Institutional Innovation: Create and deploy a comprehensive roadmap addressing storage, staking, governance, and institutional DeFi integration. Oversee Operational Excellence: Lead the evolution from a high-security storage solution to a seamless, high-availability financial engine for large institutional clients. Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Maintain the platform as a benchmark for compliance with global regulatory standards (SOC, NYDFS, etc.). Architect for the Future: Combine advanced security expertise with scalable system design in collaboration with Product, Legal, and Compliance teams. Guarantee Platform Reliability & Security: Ensure 99.99% uptime and a record of zero security incidents for the leading custody platform in the crypto industry. Deliver Market-Leading Features: Successfully implement and scale premium features tailored to asset issuers, VCs, hedge funds, and other institutional customers. Enhance Efficiency & Throughput: Improve asset movement efficiency and settlement timelines through automation and advanced signing key management. Grow the Organization: Expand the Custody Engineering team by recruiting security-oriented backend engineers and building a strong middle-management layer. Achieve Regulatory & Audit Success: Manage technical requirements for successful SOC1/SOC2 audits and state/federal regulatory examinations. Requirements include: Leadership at Institutional Scale: Proven experience leading product engineering teams in an institutional context. Security-First Approach: Strong understanding of secure system architecture. Expertise in Distributed Systems: Robust technical background in developing highly available, transactional systems. Operational Diligence: Experience managing 24/7 mission-critical systems where minimizing manual interventions is crucial. Team Scaling Ability: Proven track record of scaling teams and mentoring Senior/Staff Engineers in dynamic environments. Executive Communication Skills: Ability to convey complex blockchain and security concepts as business risks and opportunities to executives and regulators. Preferred qualifications: Crypto Expertise: Deep knowledge of blockchain protocols, smart contracts, and various consensus mechanisms (PoS vs. PoW). Familiarity with Regulated Environments: Understanding of operational frameworks such as NYDFS, BitLicense, or SEC/FINRA regulations. Job ID# P75354 Pay Transparency Notice: The target annual base salary for this position varies based on work location, ranging from $297,670 to $350,200 USD. Full-time offers from Coinbase also include bonus eligibility, equity opportunities, and comprehensive benefits (including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
