Position Type: School Nurse/Nurse Date Posted: 2/2/2026 Location: Secondary Position Summary/Purpose: The school nurse will oversee health services at the Jr/Sr High School. The primary purpose is to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities and create a healthy school climate. The school nurse will build strong relationships with school leadership, support teams, students and parents/guardians to maximize student well-being and integrate support. Responsibilities include: developing comprehensive individualized health care plans/participating in the IEP and 504 process, ensuring immunization compliance, conducting hearing and vision screenings, facilitating community coordination, performing disease surveillance and training staff. Salary: Compensation (based on 100% FTE): $48,000-$60,000 depending on years of experience Scheduled Weekly Hours: 37.5 - 40 Number of Days per Year: 180 Benefits Eligibility: Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Work collaboratively with health care providers, students, parents/guardians, school district staff and community agencies to ensure educational access and continuity of care for students. Interprets health history information, medical reports and records, nursing observations/assessments and test results to meet student needs and develop health care plans as appropriate. Develops individual health care plans when needed with specific goals, nursing diagnosis and interventions for inclusions in a student's Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). Administered medication and provides medical procedures, as needed, under the Nurse Practice Act. Skillfully handles the emergency care of acutely ill or injured individuals Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program Works collaboratively and trains/supervises health aide, or appropriate staff, to provide delegated health services to students to include medication administration, first aid and other assigned health assistant duties. Ensures competence in health room management tasks and any delegated task. Contributes and collaborates with school administration on the health assistance evaluation process Monitors immunizations, manages communicable disease/infection surveillance and control measures and assesses the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety. Follow state rules and regulations and district policy. Coordinates and participates in hearing and vision screenings following state law and district policy Maintains accurate records, documentation and confidentiality in accordance with state and federal law and district policy Serve as a member of school teams as the designated health care professional (ie emergency response team, special education team, student support team) Serves as a resource, instructor, and consultant in the area of health education Provide other related tasks as assigned by supervisor or other administrators Serves as a consultant with other school professionals/departments such as nutrition services, athletic department, physical education, counselors, teachers and administrators Communicates effectively with students, parents and staff about student health concerns Communication and actions are open and collaborative with administrators, staff and colleagues Pursues continuous professional growth Education/Experience Bachelor's degree or higher in nursing or related field from an accredited college/university Minimum 1 year experience in nursing Preferred experience in pediatric nursing, community or public health nursing or school nursing License and Certification Active Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Registered Nurse (RN) licensure; required at entry CDE Special Service Provider license with a School Nurse Endorsement (or licensure application in process) Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Equipment Computer with email and EMR (electronic medical record) ability Fax/scanner/copier Cell phone and desk phone Medical equipment to include items used for assessment and hearing/vision screening Knowledge and Other Qualifications Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal relation skills Customer service and public relations skills Critical thinking and problem-solving skills Organizational skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks with frequent interruptions Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions Ability to perform responsibilities without the necessity of close supervision Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and common software applications including Gmail and Google related applications. Supervisory Duties The school nurse is responsible for the legal and clinical supervision of delegated healthcare tasks, which is distinct from administrative supervision by a school administrator Delegation and Training: The school nurse is the only licensed person who can train and delegate specific nursing tasks (ie medication administration, blood glucose monitoring, G-tube feeding, etc.) to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs), such as health paraprofessionals or other delegated school staff, in compliance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act Oversight and Evaluation: Responsibilities include supervising the performance of these delegated tasks, ensuring appropriate documentation, reviewing the UAPs competency, and evaluation the health outcomes of the delegated care Guidance and Consultation: Serve as the primary health consultant for school personnel, providing professional health leadership and in-service training on health-related topics, emergency responses, and standard safety practices. Program Coordination: Assist in coordinating school-wide health programs, including mandated screenings (hearing and vision) and immunization surveillance, and assist administrators in developing related health policies and emergency response plans Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of all training and delegation activities, including dates and nature of supervision and ongoing instruction Strength and Mobility: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughtout the school environment (may involve walking long distances with a complex). Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting a student, moving medical equipment, handling supplies). Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and twist at the waist to perform patient care, including performing CPR or assisting a student from the floor. Ability to use upper body strength for tasks such as performing chest compressions during CPR or physically restraining a patient if necessary. Dexterity and Senses: Sufficient manual dexterity to operate medical equipment (syringes, pumps, monitors) and standard office equipment (computer, phone). Adequate vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception) to assess student health conditions (e.g., skin color changes, rashes), read labels, monitor screens, and observe students from a distance. Adequate hearing to auscultate heart, lung, and bowel sounds; take blood pressure; and hear student/staff verbalizations and emergency signals. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Environment: Work is primarily performed within a school health office and general school environment (classrooms, gymnasium, playground), which typically has a moderate noise level. Exposure: The position involves potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids (bloodborne pathogens), and occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals or other fumes/airborne particles. Hazards: May involve working near moving mechanical parts (e.g., wheelchairs, specialized equipment) and navigating potential slippery floors. The nurse must be aware of occupational hazards and follow standard safety practices. Mental Demands: The role requires awareness and the ability to respond quickly and confidentiality of sensitive informations.
