Salary : $42,806.00 - $64,210.00 Annually Location : Brainerd, MN Job Type: Part-Time Job Number: 2026-00012 Department: County Sheriff Division: Jail Opening Date: 01/16/2026 Closing Date: 3/15/2026 12:00 AM Central Position Objective Join us as a Health Technician and be part of a team that ensures the health and safety of those incarcerated and under our care. We pride ourselves on offering rehabilitative activities and quality medical assistance to those in our jail and caring for them in ways that prevents them from coming back to our facilities. Put your attention to detail and compassion for others to use while assisting in restoring inmate freedom and returning them as healthy, productive citizens of the public. Performs health care services to county jail patients/inmates under the immediate supervision of facility nurses. The health care services performed are not limited and include assisting patients/inmates with self-administration of medications, diabetic testing and other direct patient care tasks which can include bedside care and activities of daily living (ADL). The Health Technician functions as an integral member of the jail medical clinic team and demonstrates accuracy, reliability and safety in caring for patients especially regarding assistance with medication self-administration. The work performed by the Health Technician directly impacts the quality of care for the patients/inmates. Essential Duties & Responsibilities These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification. Provides care under the direction of medical clinic staff, which may include vitals, simple dressing/treatments, reporting information to nurse on-call, assisting with sick call of the patients/inmates. Performs routine non-credentialed tasks in support of medical clinic's services. This includes tasks involving minor personal services for patients/inmates in correctional facilities such as urine drug screens, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, and EKG's. These non-technical tasks involve routine care of patients/inmates that are not required to be performed by a RN. Assists with ADLs when needed including dressing, grooming, bathing, ambulation, foot care, nail care, and transfers. Documents cares that were given on appropriate forms. Ensures all medications, sharps, tools, glucometers, emergency kits, and other items are counted, calibrated, and checked as scheduled. Alerts nursing staff of any abnormalities indicated on patient/inmate flow sheets (i.e. blood pressure, weight, etc.) Responsible for medication passes for self-administration of medications by jail patients/inmates. Accurately follows the Six Rights of Medication Administration. Documents after medications are administered. Completes assigned tasks as educated and instructed by the Lead Health Technician and RNs. Along with tasks that are in line with duties of the position. Examples of tasks include: blood glucose monitors, oxygen monitoring, skin care, medication administration, taking vital signs, and other tasks as assigned. Complies with all rules and policies in order to maintain a safe work environment. Demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality. Minimum QualificationsHigh school graduate or equivalent. Two or more years of work experience. Intermediate proficiency with software applications including Microsoft Word and Excel. Desirable QualificationsCurrent Basic Cardiac Life Support certification. Valid, unrestricted, Medical Assistant, Trained Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, or License Practical Nurse license/certification. Nursing Assistant or similar classes. Six months of Health Care experience in a similar or related field. Knowledge of County and departmental policies, rules and regulations. Basic knowledge of medical terminology. Willingness to acquire additional training for medication management. Ability to provide direct and indirect leadership to the other Health Technicians. Ability to learn the security features needed to work safely in this setting, which includes but not limited to: secured doors and radio communications. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Compensation The county strives to be a market competitive employer with compensation rates that are externally competitive and internally equitable. Compensation rates are governed by the county pay matrix and applicable labor contract. Information regarding the county pay programs is available in the Human Resource Department. Paid Time Off (PTO) PTO benefit accrues at the rate of 21 days per year for the first 3 years for regular full-time staff and is pro-rated for regular part-time staff. Holidays The 12 calendar holidays that are observed by Crow Wing County are as follows: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Health Insurance Regular full-time employees and their dependents are eligible for group health insurance coverage, administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Eligibility begins on the first of the month following 30 days of employment. Regular part-time employees regularly scheduled 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage on a pro-rated basis. Dental Insurance Delta dental benefit is available to those participating in a health insurance plan. Calendar year annual maximum of $1000 per person. Life Insurance Regular full-time employees shall be provided a term life insurance policy of $50,000. Optional life insurance is available at the employee's expense. Short-Term Disability Regular full-time and part-time staff regularly scheduled at least 30 hours per week are eligible for short-term disability following 6 months of qualifying employment. Short-term disability payments begin on the first day following 14 consecutive calendar days of absence attributable to a qualifying disability. The plan provides income replacement of up to 50% of regular pay subject to a maximum limit of $1,000 per week. Long-Term Disability Regular full-time and part-time staff regularly scheduled at least 30 hours per week are eligible. Long term disability pays 50% of salary up to a maximum of $4,000 per month beginning on day 91 of total disability. The maximum benefits duration is up to the social security normal retirement date.
