Vice President (Board of Governance) Organization: Gervonni Cares Board Type: Board of Governance Time Commitment: Minimum 10 hours per month Term: 2 years (renewable) Compensation: Volunteer (unpaid) Role Summary The Vice President of the Board of Governance serves as a senior leadership partner to the Board President and Executive Director. This role provides operational support, leadership continuity, and strategic oversight, helping ensure that board initiatives, committees, and governance responsibilities are executed effectively. The Vice President is a hands-on board leader and plays a critical role in board engagement, accountability, and cross-committee coordination. The Board of Governance serves as the fiduciary and legal governing body of Gervonni Cares. Members are responsible for oversight, compliance, financial stewardship, and executive support. Key Responsibilities Board Leadership & Governance Serve as the second-in-command to the Board President Assume the duties of the President when the President is unavailable Support enforcement of bylaws, policies, and board procedures Help ensure the board meets fiduciary, legal, and ethical responsibilities Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making Committee Oversight & Coordination Serve as board liaison to one or more committees (Housing, Workforce & Education) Monitor committee progress, goals, and reporting Support committee chairs with structure, timelines, and accountability Ensure committee recommendations are elevated to the Board of Governance Board Engagement & Development Assist with board recruitment, onboarding, and retention Support board training and governance best practices Help address board participation concerns and promote engagement Mentor new board members as needed Executive & Organizational Support Provide strategic thought partnership to the Executive Director Assist with reviewing high-level program initiatives, partnerships, and growth opportunities Support crisis management or urgent organizational needs, when necessary Time Commitment Breakdown (10+ hours/month) Board meetings and preparation: 3–4 hours Committee oversight and coordination: 3–4 hours Strategic planning, leadership support, and follow-ups: 3–4 hours Ideal Candidate Profile The Vice President should have: Prior board, executive, or senior leadership experience Strong understanding of nonprofit governance Ability to lead collaboratively and problem-solve effectively Experience in one or more of the following areas: Housing or tenant advocacy Workforce development or education Finance, operations, or compliance Community development or public policy Commitment to equity, accountability, and community-centered service Why This Role Matters The Vice President ensures continuity, accountability, and momentum across the board and committees.
