Salary: $117,566.49 - $182,228.05 Annually Location : Huntersville, NC Job Type: Full time Job Number: 202600157 Department: ELECTRICITIES Opening Date: 01/06/2026 Job Description The Town of Huntersville is seeking an Electric Systems Director to oversee the electric system operations that will transition from ElectriCities to the Town in July 2026. The successful candidate will play an important role in creating a smooth transition of operations, coordinating with the current ElectriCities' management team, and shaping the future of the department. First review of applicants is expected on February 6, 2026; however, the posting will remain open until the position is filled. This position performs complex and technical work planning, organizing, and directing the operation and maintenance of the Town's electric system. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the Town Manager. Exercises departmental supervision over all department personnel. Essential Duties of the Position The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project. Oversees the operation, maintenance, development, and funding for the town's electric distribution system, including overhead and underground electric lines and equipment, and load management. Identifies and directs repair and restoration of power efforts, coordinates planned outages with residential and commercial customers. Prepares operating and capital improvement budget requests; controls expenditure of appropriated funds; supervises preparation of reports and maintenance records. Manages development and implementation of short- and long-term goals for the department. Participates in development and recommendation of electric rates. Prepares, reviews and negotiates contracts with outside labor forces for electric system maintenance and construction, including line and service, tree trimming and substation maintenance. Oversees compliance with and maintains knowledge of all applicable local, state and federal regulations related to the operation of an electric distribution system. Allocates personnel and department resources; oversees and directs departmental training; assigns and schedules work; participates in recruitment and selection of employees; makes recommendations regarding salary increases, discipline and termination; conducts employee performance evaluations. Directs safety and training programs for the department. Coordinates the sharing of information related to electric service operations, outages, and other updates to keep customers informed. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports; creates and presents information to outside parties when necessary. Coordinates with the Finance Director as needed related to billing, collections, and account maintenance. Coordinates with other town departments related to future capital needs, development and construction impacts on service delivery and electric system. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with Duke Energy, local cooperatives, municipal leaders and elected officials, and other NCMPA1 and ElectriCities members. Receives, investigates and responds to inquiries and complaints. Responds to emergencies when required. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Education and Experience Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of electric distribution systems, load capacity and basic design for municipal electric / utility operations; knowledge of local and regional electric systems; knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety practices and ability to direct staff accordingly; knowledge of public administration practices related to personnel and fiscal management; ability to review and analyze plans and specifications for the construction and maintenance of electric distribution systems; ability to formulate comprehensive operational policies and procedures; ability to prepare technical reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, associates, contractors and the general public. Bachelor's degree with coursework in engineering, preferably Electrical, or related field and at 7 to 10 years of experience with progressive responsibility in electric system management. Or a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of Professional Engineer license is preferred. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back during emergency situations and inclement weather. Supplemental Information This position's physical requirements involve light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: hearing, mental acuity, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and to noisy environmental conditions, although work is generally in a quiet location.
