This role as a Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) offers the opportunity to lead and manage a surgical orthopedic unit during shifts, ensuring high-quality patient care and safety. General Summary The NSM is a licensed Registered Nurse responsible for overseeing unit operations during assigned shifts, promoting patient safety, and supporting staff in delivering excellent care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Adhere to established policies for patient safety, including infection prevention, safe patient handling, and critical lab notifications. Monitor and coach staff compliance with safety and quality standards. Maintain central lines and prevent surgical site infections according to protocols. Provide quality nursing care, including medication administration, interventions, and patient/family education. Support quality initiatives by monitoring outcomes, participating in process improvements, and communicating goals to staff. Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments to ensure safety and quality care. Review and co-sign assessments performed by LPN staff, providing feedback to enhance performance. Utilize critical thinking to identify and address patient care needs and improve outcomes. Document patient care activities and quality monitoring accurately and efficiently. Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, and families to enhance care experiences. Delegate tasks appropriately while fostering teamwork and accountability. Adapt positively to healthcare dynamics and support organizational mission and values. Provide professional feedback and pursue continued education to improve nursing practice. Education Graduation from an accredited nursing school is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. Experience At least one year of registered nursing experience is preferred. Certification and Licensure Current RN license in a Compact state or the state of Missouri is required. Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is mandatory. Mental and Physical Requirements This role requires considerable mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 lbs., frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Working Conditions Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, as well as occasional encounters with hostile individuals, may occur. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
