Position Type: Principal Date Posted: 3/6/2026 Location: McLaurin Elementary School Date Available: 07/01/2026 Job title Elementary School Principal Reports to Assistant Superintendent Receives Guidance From: District Directors, Assistant Superintendents, and the Superintendent Supervises Certified and non-certified staff and students Full Time Compliant with position, salary and FLSA regulations Job purpose: In the Rankin County School District, the elementary school principal is responsible for providing school wide leadership and supervision, ensuring high standards of instruction and student achievement, maintaining the daily operations, and learning and growing professionally as a model to all staff. In addition, the principal's role is to ensure the safety and security of the students and staff and to help place students and teachers in a position to succeed in the classroom and in other activities in keeping with the District vision, mission and strategic plan. This position requires strong analytical skills in the areas of leading, organizing, administering, and monitoring/supervising a dynamic academic program. This transformational leader must be able to work collaboratively with the community, staff, and district administration and have strong communication and interpersonal skills in order to lead and advocate for the students of his/her school. The principal of the school is responsible for ensuring focused and timely actions are taken daily by all staff that align with the implementation of strategic plan goals, and that produce evidence of data informed decision making for both student success and staff professional growth. Duties and responsibilities: The following are essential functions the person employed in this position must be able to perform. Instructional Management Hold and maintain high expectations for instructional best practices, student achievement, and accountability ratings for his/her school Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school Initiate, design, and implement programs to meet specific needs of the school by setting into motion a strategic plan Disaggregate and track student-level, sub group, class, grade, teacher, attendance, behavior, and subject area data, etc., to inform both Tier 1 practices as well as interventions and supports, as well as to inform areas for improvement in instructional delivery and targeted strategies to maximize student growth and effectiveness of classroom instruction. Further, build capacity in staff to do the same. Make recommendations concerning the school's administration and instruction Create a master schedule to support curriculum initiatives, guidelines, and promote student achievement and schedule classes within established guidelines to meet student needs Lead in the development, determination of appropriateness, effective implementation and monitoring of the instructional program Assist in the development, revision, monitoring of implementation, and providing input of the curriculum and pacing of instruction Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the academic and behavioral progress, as well as the attendance of students Supervise the school guidance program to enhance individual student education and development Maintain high standards of student conduct, utilize positive behavior supports, and enforce discipline according to due process rights of students Establish guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline Oversees all aspects of the instructional program, school environment and the operational/fiscal health of the school Supervises, monitors, and coaches staff in the building with a focus on continuous improvement Oversees the professional development of teachers and staff, including regular supervision and evaluations Collaborates with other elementary and district administrators to provide an overall direction for teaching and learning in the school district Provides instructional leadership focused on current research and best practices in order to continually increase student achievement Manage professional time to intentionally prioritize and delegate appropriately to accomplish strategic goals and vision of the school and RCSD Communication Keep the assistant superintendent/superintendent informed of the school's administration and instruction Keep the assistant superintendent/superintendent informed of events and activities of an unusual nature Maintain and nurture active, positive, professional relationships with students, parents, and staff Conduct staff meetings and communicate appropriately and regularly in a timely manner to maintain proper functioning of the school Communicate clearly, concisely, timely, professionally and effectively with employees, students, parents, and all other stakeholders Promotes a positive tone for collaborative school/community relations by articulating the mission, seeking community support, and fostering rapport with all stakeholders Confers with parents and staff in a timely fashion to discuss educational activities, policies and student behavioral or learning issues Demonstrates resilience in the face of challenge; demonstrating de-escalation techniques and providing a calm, yet firm and assuring approach in the midst of a difficult situation Fosters an environment where staff and faculty work cooperatively together and hold each other accountable to reach high levels of student achievement Celebrate achievements and successes publicly via website and social media, keeping RCSD's public relations manager informed of special recognitions and accomplishments of school and staff Collaborates with families and stakeholders who represent diverse community interests and needs; mobilizes community resources that support and improve teaching and learning Financial Accountability Prepare and administer the school budget and supervise school finances to benefit student achievement, target strategic plan goals, and follow all applicable laws, policies, and procedures Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use Provide for adequate inventories of school property and for the security and accountability for that property Maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities Safety/Facilities Supervise the maintenance and safety of the school campus and facilities and maintain all required building records and reports Prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school's administration Work collegially with various members of the central administrative staff on school problems of more than school import, such as transportation and special services Interpret and enforce the Mississippi Public School Accountability Standards, the Mississippi Department of Education guidelines, policies, and regulations, education related legislation, district policies and administrative regulations Attend and hold special events to recognize student achievement, and attend school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events Assume responsibility for the attendance, conduct, and maintenance of health records students Assume responsibility for personal professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations; attendance of regional, state, and national meetings; and enrollment in advanced courses Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field Supervise all professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and support personnel attached to the school Assist in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating of the school's staff Orient newly assigned staff members and assist in their professional development Evaluate and counsel staff members regarding their individual and group performance Conduct staff meetings to maintain proper functioning of the school Assist in the in-service orientation and training of teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions Recommend, according to established procedures, the removal of a teacher whose work is unsatisfactory Make arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers Assume responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant Supervise the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes Plan and supervise fire drills, tornado drills, and an emergency preparedness program Assert leadership in times of civil disobedience in school in accordance with established Board policy Supervise all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school's curriculum Supervise and evaluate the school's extracurricular program Participate in principals' meetings, negotiations meetings, and such other meetings Serve as an ex officio member of all committees and councils within the school Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation Respond to written and oral requests for information Assume responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases Organize and administer the pubic relations program for the school Serve as a member of committees and attend meetings as directed by the superintendent Serve with parent, faculty, and student groups in advancing educational and related activities and objectives Delegate authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all school records and personnel related information Regular, dependable/timely, and in person attendance is an essential function of this position.
