Overview Sperry Rail Service is a leading global provider of Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) services and technology. Responsibilities This role involves extensive travel! Candidates should be prepared to be away for 3-4 months at a time in various regions. Operate a test vehicle or detector car on and off railroad tracks. Conduct vehicle inspections and prepare equipment. Record and analyze data using computer systems. Perform maintenance and repairs on the vehicle and detector carriage, including working in tight spaces. Navigate steps and ladders to enter/exit the vehicle and perform ground examinations of rails. Personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests, is mandatory. Additional safety gear may be needed when handling vehicle fluids. Annual completion of Road Worker Safety training is required. Working Conditions: All work will be conducted in the field under varying weather conditions. Safety: Adhere to all safety policies to maintain a secure work environment and report any hazards to supervisors immediately. Essential Functions: Operate: Drive the detector car, assist crew members with measurements, and manage test equipment on the rail line. Identify: Observe conditions of the car and track, evaluate test data, and assess equipment functionality. Communicate: Clearly convey information to team members using verbal and radio communication to ensure safety. Maintain: Inspect and perform maintenance on the vehicle to ensure it remains clean and functional. Physical Requirements: Work may include: Maintaining awkward body positions under the vehicle. Walking on uneven surfaces and frequently climbing steps. Grasping tools and reaching for gauges. Extended periods of sitting while operating the vehicle. Visual acuity for tracking signals and reading data. Auditory capabilities for communication and detecting alert sounds. Driving: Employ safe driving techniques and adhere to DOT regulations. Maintenance: Assist with vehicle maintenance and repairs. Ensure compliance with preventative maintenance and inspection schedules. Customer Interaction: Collaborate with railway personnel and promptly address any complaints. Input necessary data into the reporting system. Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Valid CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement. Strong communication skills. Basic mechanical skills. Able to lift up to 85 lbs and assist with heavier loads. Capability to work in confined spaces with low clearance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of commercial driving experience. High School Diploma or GED.
