Hazardous Materials Officer #00131 Job no: 5097378 Work type: Full-Time (Salaried) Location: Roanoke (City), Virginia Categories: Public Safety Title: Hazardous Materials Officer #00131 State Role Title: Emergency Coordinator III Hiring Range: $78,000 - $82,000 Pay Band: 5 Agency: Dept of Emergency Management Location: Region 6 Agency Website: Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Hazardous Materials Officer position exists to provide guidance, training, response and recovery assistance to local governments, tribal organizations and state agencies during hazardous materials emergencies or disasters. Assigned to the Region VI office to support VDEM's all-hazards emergency management programs; may be assigned other secondary duties in support of VDEM's all-hazard preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts. This position requires frequent travel and participation in an on-call rotation. A response vehicle is assigned. Provide guidance and assistance to local governments, tribal organizations and state agencies during hazardous materials emergencies. As needed, make entry into hazardous areas for the purpose of assessment or mitigation. Assist in the implementation of the Commonwealth's hazardous materials emergency response program and help enhance local and tribal hazardous materials emergency response capabilities. - The selected applicant will be required to obtain the Virginia Hazardous Material Specialist certification within twelve months of employment. - Must meet NFPA 1500/1582 requirements for physical fitness, be a Fire Fighter II and Instructor II, Hazardous Materials Technician and possess significant teaching and curriculum development experience. All VDEM employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, and natural or man-made disasters/events as directed. This may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official EWP. Minimum Qualifications - Considerable experience responding to hazardous materials incidents. - Considerable knowledge of the nature and types of emergency service required in hazardous materials disasters and the technical and administrative details associated with providing such services. - Considerable knowledge of adult training methods, curriculum design, needs assessments, and evaluation. - Public speaking skills required. - Ability to develop and conduct hazardous materials training. - Ability to work independently and with all levels of staff, public officials, and citizens. - Ability to enter hazardous chemical environments in self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and chemical protective clothing under adverse conditions. Additional Considerations - Certified Hazardous Materials Specialist as defined by OSHA/NFPA 470 or equivalent certification is preferred. - NFPA/VA Fire Programs SCBA Certification, Fire Fighter II, Instructor II, HAZMAT Specialist - College level management, fire science, public safety or physical sciences is preferred Special Instructions You will be provided a confirmation of receipt when your application and/or résumé is submitted successfully.
