Salary: $1,402.50 - $1,728.10 Biweekly Location : Weston, WV Job Type: Full-Time Permanent Job Number: DOT26D7076A Division: West Virginia Department of Transportation District/Subdivision: District 7 Opening Date: 03/09/2026 Closing Date: 3/15/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Nature of Work The Transportation Worker 2 Mechanic is assigned to the District Equipment Shop, but will report to work at the Barbour County Headquarters in Barbour County. Under general supervision, performs full level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment in need of repair. Will perform minor overhaul of gasoline or diesel-powered equipment engines. Performs vehicle diagnostics and troubleshooting for repairs. This would include but not be limited to the replacement of motors, belts, seals, bearings, blades, brakes, tires, making minor mechanical repairs and routine services in both the field and at the garage. With appropriate certifications and licenses, drives equipment after repairs to test operations. Responsible for inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Will assist higher level mechanics in advanced equipment repairs. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. A tanker endorsement may be required. Performs related work as required. Preference may be given to candidates currently possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Pay Grade 11H Hourly Rate: $17.5313 Typical Duties and Responsibilities Transportation Worker 2 - Mechanic Perform maintenance, minor repairs, and minor overhaul on gasoline powered equipment. May work with components on diesel-powered equipment. Changes and repairs tires on vehicles and heavy equipment. Install windshields and door glass. Service components of chassis assembly. Repair hydraulic brake systems. Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Drives equipment after repairs to test operation. Assists higher level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs. Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment. Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Skills and Knowledge • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment. • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment. • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment. • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades. • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used. • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment. • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools. • Ability to climb high steel structures. • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments. • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair. • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders). • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment. • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers. Minimum Requirements REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Mechanic: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Mechanic Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
