A Shelter Technician's main purpose is to provide quality care to the animals at the Shelter by providing medical care, sanitary living conditions in accordance with the NC Animal Welfare Act. Responsible for data entry with proper documentation on all records, as well as certified in North Carolina to administer rabies vaccinations, and certified with the NC Department of Agriculture in humane euthanasia. Knowledgeable of which sanitation products and procedures to use as they vary by area and species. Administer age-appropriate vaccinations to all animals that meet the guidelines for vaccinations. Knowledge of which vaccinations each species receives and what age receives the vaccinations. Performs blood draw intravenously (IV) on felines and canines to run simple diagnostic testing in -house. Ensure Technicians can inject approved drugs IV as instructed by the Shelter Manager. Performs humane euthanasia under the guidelines of the Humane Society of the United States euthanasia reference manual and certified by the NC Department of Agriculture and must recertify every 5-years. Enters data into the Animal Shelter's data management software. Correctly document all vaccinations and medications listed, along with citations from Animal Control and general notes specific to the animal. Does daily medications during feeding rounds as instructed on each animal's medication chart to maintain animal health. Each Shelter Technician writes medication charts as needed and as instructed by the Shelter Manager or Veterinarian. Performs tasks using safe and humane animal handling techniques to transfer animals into enclosures, proper restraints for giving vaccinations and blood draw. Knowledge of when to use safety equipment for a particular task. Provides customer services to all citizens visiting the shelter through running adoptions, returning animals to their owner, and answering questions regarding the animals. Shelter Technicians are North Carolina certified to provide 1-year rabies vaccinations to the public. Prepares animals' daily meals to meet their nutritional needs and provide clean drinking water throughout the day. Operates dishwasher to wash and sanitize the animal's food and water bowls, litter pans, and feral cat boxes to eliminate all bacteria present on surfaces. Operate the washing machine and dryer and fold laundry for the linens and cloth toys used daily. SUPERVISION: Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Animal Shelter Manager. Supervision Given: (If supervisor list positions supervised) Position has no supervisory responsibilities. INTERPERSONAL CONTACT: Communicate and work as a team in the work environment. Interact with the General Public. Have a passion for animals and the ability to interact with them. RECRUITMENT STANDARDS (Core Competencies): Must have the ability to read and write. Must have the ability to operate office equipment such as basic computers, telephone, copier, fax, etc. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge, skills, and abilities of County and City Animal Control Laws and the Animal Welfare Act. Knowledge, skills, and abilities of handling the use of controlled substances, dispensing medications, drawing blood, administering vaccinations, euthanasia, run diagnostic testing, and performing behavior assessments. Knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate office equipment such as telephone, copier, fax, computer, etc. Knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide efficient and effective customer service. Knowledge, skills, and abilities to appropriately handle animals and use animal safety equipment such as catch pole, feral cat box, EZ Nabber, Kevlar gloves, muzzles, blankets, net, etc. Knowledge, skills, and abilities in inputting medical records and performing general intake examinations. Physical Activities, Visual Acuity, and Working Conditions for this Position. Climbing - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. License or Certification Requirements (or the ability to obtain certifications within six (6) months of employment): Certified Euthanasia Technician Certified Rabies Vaccinator Valid North Carolina Driver's License Supplemental Information Note: In accordance with State mandates and the Rockingham County Emergency Operations Plan, Rockingham County Health and Human Services staff from the Divisions of Social Services, Public Health and Integrated Health are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster. Please be advised that every staff person is eligible to be assigned to an emergency shelter or Emergency Operations Center. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. If you have student loans and you are selected for full-time employment with Rockingham County, you may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance due on your William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan after you have made 120 qualifying payments on those loans while employed full-time by certain public service employers. Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance For Full Time employees in a regular position, insurance is available and effective the first day of the following month after having worked for an entire month. The County currently pays 100% of the cost for regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. Dependent coverage is also available. Bereavement Local Government Retirement System All employees in regular full or part time position are required to contribute to the retirement system. Contributions are taken on a pre-tax basis. The current contribution amount is 6%. Supplemental Retirement Plans NC 401(k)- Employees have the option of making contributions on a pre or post tax basis to a 401(k) and on a pre tax basis to a a 457(b) plan. Contributions will be matched by the county, up to 1% or their annual base salary.
