JOB SUMMARY: The Financial Controller plays a critical role in managing the company’s financial health. This position is responsible for overseeing all accounting activities and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting. The Financial Controller will establish systems and controls that not only minimize risk but enhance the accuracy of financial results while ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Team Leadership Lead and enhance the operations of the accounting department, creating a structured approach for accountability and prioritization. Recruit, train, and nurture the accounting team, providing constructive feedback through performance reviews. Cultivate an organizational culture that values accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Facilitate financial literacy for non-financial managers, as needed. Guide team goal setting and progress monitoring to ensure accomplishment of work assignments. Oversee the management of joint ventures to ensure operational success. Provide expertise in researching accounting and auditing practices to colleagues and clients. Accounting and Finance Operations Manage daily accounting tasks, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, billing, payroll, reconciliations, and general ledger activities. Organize and supervise the month-end close processes. Handle the monthly accounting functions including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis. Direct the financial management of joint ventures effectively. Create and uphold comprehensive accounting policies and procedures. Work closely with the team to ensure timely and accurate invoicing and collections within established credit terms. Budgeting & Forecasting Collaborate with the CFO and departmental heads during the annual budgeting process. Prepare ongoing forecasts and cash flow projections. Monitor and analyze actual versus budget performance, providing comprehensive variance analysis. Deliver strategic insights for cost management, margin optimization, and working capital management. Accounting System Oversight Act as the principal administrator for the accounting and job cost system, Deltek Ajera. Lead in system upgrades, troubleshooting, data integrity maintenance, and user support. Spot opportunities for automation and streamline accounting processes through technology. Partner with IT and software vendors to enhance financial system performance. Train accounting and project staff on system functionalities and best practices. Reporting Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Maintain compliance with GAAP and pertinent laws and regulations. Establish a robust internal control environment to protect company assets. Supervise all tax filings and manage the preparation of financial proforma evaluations. Develop benchmarks to assess operational performance against company goals. Produce necessary financial and operational metrics for management review. Lead the development of the annual budget and forecast, including variance calculations and reporting to management. Generate management cost reports and conduct financial analyses for capital investments, pricing strategies, and contract negotiations. Compliance Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audits, providing actionable recommendations for improvements. Monitor company debt levels while ensuring compliance with debt covenants and reporting requirements. Ensure adherence to both internal and external regulatory obligations. Other Duties as Assigned by CFO Required Skills KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Deep knowledge of accounting principles and GAAP as well as FAR, with an ability to understand company financial policies. Thorough familiarity with accounts payable/receivable systems, general ledger processes, and corporate operating procedures. Proficient in project costing and analysis, ensuring adherence to company policies on credit and collections. Computer Literacy: Adept with Ajera or Vision accounting software, and proficient in MS Office (especially Excel). Possess extensive knowledge of automated accounting systems for managing a variety of financial transactions. Detail-oriented with the ability to independently handle various financial tasks accurately. Capacity to exercise good judgment and decision-making, understanding the implications of choices made. Strong communication skills, capable of presenting complex information clearly and negotiating effectively to foster collaboration. Required Experience EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration. Experience: 8-10 years of relevant accounting experience, specifically in the engineering, construction, or professional services sectors. LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred but not mandatory. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is primarily a sedentary role, but some filing may be necessary. Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and perform tasks while standing or bending as required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted in a professional office setting. Standard office equipment including computers, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines is regularly used.
